    Wifi- Weak Security

Hey all. So a while back I was in the US and then left the US and went out the US again. I have an apartment outside the US and what I noticed was when i got back, whenever I have my iphone connected to my wifi... its a modem/router all in one ... it reads

    My internet connection

    But under it shows

    Weak Security

Does anyone know why it does that? When i click on info on my iphone, it says wpa/wpa2 (tkip) is not considered secure. If this is your wifi network, configure the router to use wpa2 aes or wpa3 security type. I never had this previously.

The thing is there is 2 other wifi connections i have used in the building... one is a shared wifi that the building has here... i rarely use it since i have my own wifi. But that doesn't show weak security on my iphone when i connect to it. The other wifi connection i can connect to.. is a neighbors wifi connection. I had connected to it last time when i was helping them out with their wifi connection and have the password saved to my iphone. Though i dont use it.. only time is when i go to their apartment and help them with something and use his wifi... since my wifi is a bit far away. Now that wifi... doesn't have weak security either shown on my iphone when i connect to it.

Now... im pretty certain no one messed with my internet while i was away from my apartment. But they they do some painting and things was i was away and basically unplugged everything from the outlet. The people who do this aren't tech savy i assume for this.

But can someone explain why it shows weak security for my wifi? The thing is why didn't it show this last time since i never make changes to my wifi connection? Im only the only using my wifi and mainly use it wired with my laptop. Could it be an IOS update that caused this? Then again... why would it show it for mine and not the other two wifi connections?

This is due to the iOS 14 update:
You need to access the router’s settings & change the security to WPA2-PSK, it is the WPA which is causing the message.

Okay but any reason why it doesn't show this message for the two other wifi connections i connect to? Are those wpa2-psk?

But this is no big deal keeping it like this right?

Are they on the same router? If yes then they’re probably already picking that up automatically; if not the router they’re using is probably set to that security already. Or they’re not using iOS 14/14.2.
If you don’t change then it’s a security risk for the router & any devices connected to that.

Okay so for those 2 other wifi connections. The one connection is at my neighbor's apartment. He thus has his own modem. He uses the wifi in his apartment for his devices. Let's call that wifi connection 1.

The other wifi connection... is a shared wifi that people in the building can use that is provided for the entire building. Let's call that wifi connection 2. That wifi connection however... somehow goes through my neighbor's modem/router. Does that make sense? What is the term for that? For example if you turn off his modem/router or it doesn't work... then the other connection does the same exact thing. Like imagine electricity goes out... well wifi 1 isn't available and neither is wifi 2. But when i connect to either of those wifi connections, it doesn't have that wifi weak security message like on my iphone.

But would you say its necessary for me to change my wifi security then to WPA-2? I have no idea if an android phone would show the same message though if they were to see the wifi connections and then see if mine has that message?

It sounds like connection 2 is ‘stealing’ the 1 wifi connection.
Wifi connection 1 possibly has a guest wifi connection which anyone can connect to.
Unfortunately the weak connection can only be changed on the Router & not via the phone & it only affects iDevices running iOS14.

Well im not sure how its setup exactly but the point is the modem in his apartment is needed for the shared wifi to work in the building. Thus if you turn off his internet... the shared internet for ppl who try to use it won't work.

But for me with the iphone... is this really a big deal though? Again i think before i did an ios update, i never seen weak security before under it.

I didn’t recommend turning off the internet only to change the router’s settings. If there are any devices which require the older wifi protocol then these will stop working or will require updating.
    You can ignore the message.
As posted the iOS 14 update is the cause of the message.

At a guess, if there's a router still using WPA then it's 'cos one or more users have older equipment like original Kindles which don't understand WPA2 but still need a WiFi connection to the internet for WhisperSync to Amazon.
