    Ethernet fault on motherboard

As the title suggest really my Ethernet on my motherboard has randomly started to drop connection or sometimes it just won’t connect to the net at all so I restart it and sometimes it works. Failing that I have to use a WiFi dongle connected via USB. When Ethernet cables connected I get the identifying network thing I the bottom right in the taskbar sometimes it says connected no internet access or other times it says there’s no Ethernet cable connected to the computer.

I have tried laptops on the port on the wall which connect no problem so it’s not the network connection on the wall in my office that’s faulty.

I have tried different cables still the same issue sometimes it works sometimes it doesent.

Tried disabling re-enabling the network adapter.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the network adaptor.

Driver updates on the adaptor nothing seems to worm so my theory is the mobo is about 4 years old now and the port has developed a fault somewhere.

So I bought a new PCI Ethernet card capable of upto 1Gbps speed installed it installed the driver it’s max speed is 10mbps.

Tried changing the speed duplex from auto to full duplex 1Gbps still 10mbps on speed test even after restarting the pc to.

Any ideas on a fix for either issue either the original Ethernet or the new Ethernet card?

    Thanks

    Brian

    Hi Brian,

try loading this web page while using your new Ethernet card and post the results here. This will proof the TCP/IP configuration for this connection.

    SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Analyzer

This TCP Optimizer app will allow adjustments of MTU size using a GUI.

People dont understand full duplex it can make the speed crawl as it sends and recieves at the same time what happens the pc or the router cant cope with it so keeps having to resend so speed drop. you dont want duplex at all start with the lowest speed then slowly try next level

Improper Duplex settings can impair through-put

As Samuria mentioned, having the wrong configuration in the Duplex settings can seriously impair your connection speed.

It's very easy to verify. Look in device manager/ethernet controller properties/advanced tab/speed & duplex.
Confirm the setting is set to auto-negotiation.

I took apart the ports downstairs in the lounge by the modem, re-wired it, took apart the port in my office re-wired it. Changed the Ethernet downstairs and upstairs and it seems to be working now I hope the issue is fixed but it’s don’t this before where it works for a day or two then stops. So I will keep this post updated thank you for all your help everyone.

That might be good news, maybe.

If you have the time, verifying the items posted in this thread would likely be beneficial and give you a head start should this issue return.

Regardless, these configurations are all part of optimizing your settings for the best performance of your PC, it's easy and free.

If it's any help there are cable tester that have a remote so you can test the cable from a socket back to the other end. They're cheap enough, think mine was about 6 bucks. It's come in handy a couple times. I had a tech here run a new cable from router to living room. It wouldn't get 1gb. This thing showed him his brand new cable was bad, it did have nick in it.
