Cannot See Computer on Home Network

I have 2 desk top computers on a Home Network: Al and Mary Lou. Mary Lou can see Al (see attachment 1), but Al cannot see Mary Lou (see attachment 2) - it can see Mary Lou's media device, but not the computer. Mary Lou's folders are set to Share with "All." (see attachment 3). At one time all worked well, but now it doesn't. Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi, networking/sharing in Win 10 is somewhat uncertain and fragile. Sometime you see me, sometimes you don't after logging in - and sometimes it simply takes time, then bingo. Hmm. A good many threads struggling with this.

Make sure you've worked through this (related tutorials follow the main text):
Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10

One thing I've just tried suggested elsewhere on tenforums is to schedule the lines below in a bat script to run on logon. In a properly configured network this helps with the time delay and odd non-discoverable situations. I'm not suggesting this will necessarily resolve your case- if your PC is not discoverable after 30 mins, something else is wrong.

    #nircmd exec hide "exec hide "D:\Utilities\bat scripts\FunctDiscoveryNW.bat
    # nircmd exec hide "xxxxx.bat"

    net stop FDResPub
    net start FDResPub

(The first two commented out lines point to a way to run this without a command box flashing, using a free utility called nircmd - don't bother with that initially).

Often the problem you can't see it by name but if you use its IP try connecting via its IP ie\\192.168.1.34\sharename

    Are both computers Windows 10?

From a Elevated Command Prompt on Mary computer, enter net share. Post results here. Mine looks like this:

    C:\Windows\system32>net share

    Share name Resource Remark

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ADMIN$ C:\Windows Remote Admin
    C$ C:\ Default share
    D$ D:\ Default share
    E$ E:\ Default share
    F$ F:\ Default share
    G$ G:\ Default share
    H$ H:\ Default share
    IPC$ Remote IPC
    X$ X:\ Default share
    Lenovo_C C:\
    Lenovo_D D:\
    Lenovo_E E:\
    Lenovo_F F:\
    Lenovo_G G:\
    Lenovo_H H:\

    Users C:\Users
    The command completed successfully.

I used [DOS][/DOS] tags for the above.

    That Did It - But...

[QUOTE=dalchina;1989562]Hi, networking/sharing in Win 10 is somewhat uncertain and fragile. Sometime you see me, sometimes you don't after logging in - and sometimes it simply takes time, then bingo. Hmm. A good many threads struggling with this.

I worked through the (excellent) tutorial and found SMB Direct & SMB 1 were not running on AL (Win10 Pro) so I enabled both per the tutorial. SMB 1 was not running on Mary Lou (Win10 Home) so I enabled it also per tutorial. Now both machines are discoverable on each.

However, the tutorial, "How to Enable or Disable SMB1 File Sharing Protocol in Windows" has a big red flag about SMB 1. It states "For security reasons, Microsoft recommends that you disable SMB1 immediately. Ransomware targets the vulnerabilities of the SMB service of the Windows operating system to propagate. To defend yourself against WannaCrypt ransomware it is imperative that you disable SMB1 as well as install the patches released by Microsoft." Do I have to be vulnerable to ransomware in order to use networking?

Thanks Samuria, but please excuse my ignorance - I have no idea on how to do that. Would you please explain for future reference.

Thanks Ztruker. I was successful using the tutorial suggested by dalchina, but here is Mary's net share results anyways in case you see something weird.
