Laptop wakes up Desktop from sleep when I turn it on (suspect WOL).

Both my laptop and PC run Windows 10 1909 (build 18363.720) currently but I've had this issue for over a year that I've noticed, I'm finally annoyed enough by it to ask for help. Searching online seems to yield a lot of duff results.

I know what happens at any rate, I'd just like to know why and if I can stop it without turning off WOL: My desktop will be in sleep mode (not hibernate). When I turn on the laptop from being shut down, or wake it from sleep the desktop will wake up from sleep as well. I have several computers on the network but only these two are running Windows 10 (the others are either Linux or Mac) - All my computers support Wake on LAN, but only the laptop wakes the other Win10 computer, nothing else. This does not work vice versa - ie the desktop won't wake up the laptop if it is sleeping, though I suspect that is because my laptop is connected wirelessly to my router where as the desktop is connected via ethernet.

I guess it's setting related to WOL on the laptop or the desktop (or both) causing the problem - I am assuming that when the laptop is turned on or woken from sleep it scans the network and "sees" the sleeping network connection for my desktop and sends some kind of data packet to it. Obviously the desktop sees it as a WOL request and wakes up.

Ultimately I either want to stop the laptop from doing this or get the desktop to ignore the requests, however, I cannot turn WOL off completely on the desktop at least as I do use it often to wake the computer myself so I can access files and such.

    Hello
    Welcome to the site

I do not know how you have set this up
However this is my understanding of the situation and MAY solve the problem.

    Wake on LAN
set in firmware - BIOS/UEFI does not distinguish between computers connected to the same network - eg your home network/modem router etc. Therefore it will wake them all. However see below please

IF you have it set in firmware then as you say the desktop does not wake the laptop - as that is connected wireless, and the laptop wireless adapter does not recognize the WOL signal. HOWEVER the converse applies, when the laptop WOL the desktop does respond.

The settings should if by chance you have made it in firmware be turned OFF in the setup (This may be dependant on the sleep sates available on the computers) you may find that after making the windows settings you do have to turn it on in setup. However if as I said you have turned it on there - try turning it off and setting as below.

They should then be configured via the network adapters.

Go to Control Panel expand network adapters
right click the wired adapter on the desktop
    click Properties
click the advanced tab on the top bar
    scroll down to
wake on magic packet set it enabled on the right DO NOT click OK
then go to the power management tab
click to check the boxes by the side of the entries
allow this device to wake the computer
    and
only allow a magic packet to wake the computer
(You will I think find that you must allow the device )
    Now click OK

Repeat the same exercise with the laptop but this time of course selecting the wireless adapter.

Then you MAY depending on what you use now to activate the WOL if it still wakes the desktop from the laptop
    consider this
    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wake_on_lan.html
I know it says WOL does not work on wireless, but I think that is left in as an error being there from the early days of the
    Nirsoft app.

AN old topic from this site, but it may help and links to the Nirsoft I have given you and has other tips you may find helpful
Wake On LAN is Not Working

    Good luck with it.
