2 of 3 computers in home network only show multimedia devices

Since some time two out of three computers in my home network only show multimedia devices including the two other computers. All the permissions in home sharing are correct for connection without password. The shared folders can be accessed by anyone.
    What is wrong?

    Hi

Try changing the name of the PC and reboot to see if it helps !
Could also make sure that SMB 1.0 is enabled in "Turn Windows Features on or Off"

It's a pity, new computer name no eureka! Smb 1.0 has been turned on as long as I can remember. The other desktop can see three computers but has no access to the others only to his own shares. The whole bunch is provided with the latest windows updates. Please give me a clue!

sorry to ask this, but did you rename the PC or just the Icon on the desktop. How to Rename Your Windows 10 Computer
I only ask because in the past, it has happened...

And, please checkto see if SMB 1.0 is enabled, as Microsoft updates keep disabling it.

There are some services which must be running also, have a look at Brinks solution here:
Turn On or Off Network Discovery in Windows 10 | Tutorials

probably worth disabling SMB 1.0 and updating to SMB 2.0/3.0

Post back if you need help on doing this.

I had really changed the computer name. I have windows 10 version 8106 but do note dispose of SMB 2.0/3.0. From another thread (Connecting PC 10 - Microsoft Community) I have distilled afew actions i.e. putting 6 services on automatic and changing the restore options. This did something to my home network but did not fully recover it.
Please look at the three attachments for the present situation. Part parts of the network are displayed. If the machines can see themselves they can see their own share, but to the other computer(s) access is denied. Ask your network manager it says, but that is me and I still don't have a clue.

You have media sharing turned on for all devices and probably on the other devices. If you do not want to see these devices, turn off Media sharing by device or for all devices.

    • To turn off for all devices, Click on Start > type "services.msc" in the search field and press enter.
    • In the "Services" window, look for the following entry: Windows Media Player Network Sharing Services.
    • Double click and set the "Startup type" as "Disabled"

To set individual devices, goto Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Centre
click Media streaming options and uncheck devices you dont want to see.

    Hope this helps

    Hi

OK I understand now, This is not an issue with devices appearing as media devices, it is an issue where devices are simply not appearing in the network list.

Where do you get the "access denied, contact your network manager"?

    I would suggest updating to 1809 - 17763.253
Just to ensure that you are at the latest release and updates installed.

As you will have found, there are many posts about this issue and unfortunately there are many proposed resolutions. Enabling SMB 1.0 and the Services listed below normally resolves the issue.

    • Function Discovery Provider Host - Automatic
    • Function Discovery Resource Publication - Automatic
    • DNS Client - Automatic
    • SSDP Discovery - Automatic
    • UPnP Device Host - Automatic

Older and non compatible devices need SMB 1.0 to be visible on the network and this would need to be enabled on all devices as well not just the PC you are describing.

    To recap....

Can you see all devices in network devices as you would expect on the other PCs/Laptops?
Can you ping the devices by IP and by Name? Can you access the PCs via command line \\PCName\Share
    ------
If you have ensured SMB 1.0 is enabled, SMB Direct, as per the image image below

2 of 3 computers in home network only show multimedia devices-smb.jpg

Then I can only suggest corrupt registry settings.
try running sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt to check for any integrity violations.

then try and force the settings again, try clearing the the SMB 1.0 and SMB Direct settings completely and restarting, then select them as per the image above followed by a restart.

    Please post back with updates

I have done everything you wrote in your last post. No integrity problems. But still the problem remains.
Now I have done a fresh windows install on the laptop (I have got a back-up) The two desk tops can connect to the laptop now. Then I have updated to version 1809 to see if the update is the culpritt. But much to my surprise the shares are still accessable. What else could it be?

    try this:
Turn On or Off Network Discovery in Windows 10

Network discovery requires that the services below are enabled, set to automatic (startup type), and running (status).

    DNS Client
    Function Discovery Provider Host
    Function Discovery Resource Publication
    SSDP Discovery
