File sharing - unable to see other computers

I have only two computers on my home network connected by a switch/router. It used to work fine when it comes to sharing and transferring files. They can usually see each other after turning on sharing for any individual folders or files, though, sometime, it does take a few minutes for the other computer to appear under "Network" on the Explorer left pane.

But after recent upgrades, as late as last night, both computer can not see each other, and there are not "sharing" selections anymore when right-clicking on any folder or files. There is only "Give Access to"-->"Specific People", which I tried to type in "\\computername\user" to allow access, but nothing happens. "Give Access to"-->"Home Group " does nothing.

The "Share" tab on the top pane of Explorer is greyed out for all file and folders I selected.

There is no "Home Group" can be found anywhere.

Clicking "Network" on the left pane of Explorer, it does discover the other computer on under "Media Devices", but not under "Computer", which only shows the local computer name, not the other.

I am at a lost, please help. I urgently need to move about a 1TB of photo/video files after a long trip overseas, from my laptop to my desktop. Simple thing, but very hard to achieve.

    cheers

Assuming your on latest update home group has been removed hence why it doesn't work. You now use workgroups which has been around for a long time. So you need to check both are in the same workgroup then remove any shares then create new ones giving everyone rights give it up to 30 mins to see each other check you can ping by both IP and name

I used Shawn Brink's well written and illustrated tutorial on file sharing to help me resolve my file sharing problems with Windows 10 Pro version 1803 & 1809. Note: Homegroup was removed in version 1803 that why you can't find it.

Thanks mate. Sorted, just having to turn ON the Automatic Discovery of the two Function Discovery services in the first part of the tutorial.

I reckon diagnosing PC problems now are just like a medical GP, which can only rely on memory of often "seen" cases, the volume of information are so huge, like the bible that GP use. There is no logic to it, just knowing where the info is. Unlike the old days, we can dig into the system and examine things ourselves.

Call that progress, if you might.

    cheers
