Open encripted email attachements without Word or Office

    HI guys.

I have been sent an email that was encrypted and that contained a number of files, pdf's and Word docx. I had to get a one time code to read the email and that was OK.

I was able to read the pdf files but not the .docx ones that required Word because they were protected by IRM and should be opened in desktop version of M$ Word. I don't have a M$ account and use Libra Office when needed, but in this case it only showed the jumbled text that couldn't be read.

Is there any way to read these files without selling my soul to the devil? I know that I can get a trial version but that means that I have to create an MS account

If you mean that they need an MSOffice password to open them then you will not be able to bypass that requirement.
Other applications can process MSOffice passwords. I have just tested LibreOffice and it is one of them, it processes password-protected Word documents correctly - it demands the password when you try to open the Word file in LibreOffice Writer.
I suggest you check with the file source how the Word files were encrypted.
[I have never seen a reference to IRM in this regard.]

I had no idea you were trying to open it in a browser. My Firefox will not open Word documents but it just keeps looping & re-presenting me with an open file options dialog.
The IRM reference might be your Firefoxes desperate attempt to interpret something it does not understand.

I suggest you try LibreOffice Writer. It is made to be able to open Word files.
    LibreOfficePortable download
If it does not open it [or present you with a password entry box] then you really are going to have to check back with the file's source.

Just to clarify, All that was in the original email is a link called "Read the Message" which links to this, [url=https://outlook.office365.com/Encryption/retrieve.ashx?recipientemailaddress?recipientemailaddress=[/url], and then a load of details which I have deleted. So it was the email message that opened the web site.

I have contacted the sender to ask for alternative files if possible.

To the OP: I take it that you trust the sender, and know why they are sending links to encrypted files?
