Office 2019 Business Full 1 PC License (and old Publisher)

    Windows 10 (PC) version 20H2 Build 19042.985
    Hi.

Right from the start, this topic has nothing to do with any of the Microsoft 365 SUBSCRIPTIONS plans. Everything that I am writing here is in regards to the traditional PC license(s) for one computer.

So now that's out of the way.

My wife has a PC that is currently running Office 2010. Yea, I know. A dinosaur but it still works great.

She wants to upgrade to Office 2019 but the Business license does not come with Publisher. She would have to buy the Pro license but that's over $480 including taxes. That's just not going to work with our budget.

Now of course she could just buy the Business license and Publisher license separately but then that will still comes to be a little over $400 including taxes. Not practical.

    So hears my questions:

Is it possible for her to install Office 2019 Business license, then uninstall all of Office 2010 apps except for Publisher?? In other words, can she just keep Publisher on her computer and get rid of the rest of the old Office 2010 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access)??

If it's going to work, i would try this way

Uninstall 2010 first, using a dedicated uninstalling program like Geek Uninstaller or RevoUninstaller (both have freeware versions)

Then install the later Office version

Then re-install 2010, just selecting the MS Publisher option only.

That will probably work [I still install an old Office 97 application, Bookshelf, before installing Office and it is happy with that].

1 Make a system image before you start so that you can get back to square one if it all goes wrong.

2 Check if your Office 2010 installation method would allow you to uninstall individual applications [because some do not] -
    Control panel,
    Progs & features,
    <select your entry for Office>,
    right-click, Uninstall/Change,
see if it is going to let you choose items to uninstall or not,
then just cancel it - this was only to test the possibilities.

3.1 I would not uninstall anything. Just install Office 2019 and let it tell you if it objects to any of the old applications being there. Try every application to see if it all works.

3.2 If that causes problems then [& if the results of para 2 were suitable], uninstall everything in Office 2010 that you are going to overwrite with Office 2019 and then run the Office 2019 installation. Try every application to see if it all works.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Macrium Reflect [free edition] is an imaging utility that is often recommended in this forum and is so well-known here that you can get plenty of help for it.

    - Don't use the MS equivalent. Even MS have said so.Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect - TenForumsTutorials

It can also make bootable system images. This facility is called viBoot^^^.

^^^ viBoot used to require Windows 10 Pro because of the virtualisation method it worked with but v8 is more flexible. To find out if it really will work with Windows 10 Home, watch out for any progress made in New viBoot VM Options - TenForums

    Thank you

    Thank you all.

It's been a long time since I messed with Office 2010 but I do remember that some software/programs have the method of installing and removing specific parts or all of the apps. It will be a few weeks before I can look into this but when I do, I will be sure to report back here.

    Thank you again.

    Hi folks
If she doesn't need Office 2019 - and unless she's a power EXCEL user there's very little (if any) reason to upgrade to Office 2019 currently. Office 2010 still supports all the latest office document forums.

If of course you can get Office 2019 from the workplace for Free then a different situation. !!!

    Cheers

Thank you jimno. The reason to upgrade is because MS quite offering support in 2020. This includes the end of future security patches. My wife and I are both all about security.

Understandable. I have Office 2000 on a couple of Notebooks without issue but I did a Custom install leaving out Outlook, prefer Webmail provided by my Domain host, great at catching SPAM and anything with a virus in it. I also have no need for Macros which can carry problems in documents coming in and if needing Office forms/templates such as a simple checkbook register for Excel I get them from office.com.

Thanks for the info. I wonder how we all would function if a major solar flare were to hit Earth knocking out all the grids and satellites? We would have to go back to manual typewriters and paper and smoke signals to communicate. With the whole world connected, which is a good thing, it can fall pretty hard really fast with just one simple natural event or major cyber attack. Pretty scary if you think about it.

I'll stop it here. Admin can close this post if so desired. However, I will report back my findings and how it worked out for for her.

My wife install Office 2019. She is still having issue in getting the new Office's programs to open the file types by default.

Here's the process of her installation:

    1. Just bought a digital license
    2. Downloaded the install file
    3. Click to begin install
    4. After installation, it ask for a license key which she entered.
    5. After completion, we realize it never asked to uninstall her old version of Office 2010.

We are stuck with 2010 still being the default. I tried changing the app default via the default apps settings but the new 2019 Office did not show such option. I even went directly to the folder where the exe file is at and it would not work stating "you can't run this blah blah..."

I even tried to manually set it as the default by right-clicking on a docx file and chose Open with.. but again it still would not work.

However, if I click on the Windows Key and type in 'Word' (or any other related app), I can see the new 2019 version and I can open it. I just can't get it to set as the default.

So what in the world is going on here? Should I be reinstalling it or do a quick repair or what?

    Thank you.
