It is definitely a display issue. When the screen freezes:
1. Restart, let the screen come to login (you cannot see this, but it does happen in the background)
2. press control, and then your password
3. after a few minutes the computer will start, you cannot see that though
4. Press the key F4 (as if you are changing the display to a projector). If nothing happens, try 3-4 times slowly each time pausing to see a flicker/ or screen showing up
5. You can eventually see the screen...
6. Select either dual screen display or "show second screen only" option...
7. Quickly back up your data....
8. Never ever upgrade Windows until everyone says its safe... No use being on the bleeding edge.
I was updating a Dell Precision M4600 from Windows 8.1 to Window 10 Pro. For me the black screen with white cursor (and the processor furiously running) was caused by the laptop having an onboard Intel HD video as well as an nVidia video card. I had the Optimus technology turned off in the BIOS. That meant I was using the nVidia exclusively, not the onboard Intel.
I forced a shutdown, went into the BIOS and enabled Optimus so that the laptop was using the onboard Intel HD video. That was all it needed, and then the update to Windows 10 proceeding without a hitch.
Sure do! Here's what worked for me... Common Faults / Fixes List - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums
This is my first time posting to this forum but I have the exact same issue with my computer. It's a Dell 15 Inspiron. I just downloaded Windows 10. My computer screen is black with the HDD light stuck on. However, I do have an external display connected and I CAN still use the computer. The HDD does blink with the external display connected. I still can't get the actual computer's display to work by duplicating or extending. I've tried restarting and resetting my computer with no luck. If you are having this issue hook up an external display via VGA or HDMI. At least that way you might be able to troubleshoot some. I'm no expert so I'm not sure what else to do but just thought I'd share this.
What video card do you have? If Nvidia try updating the driver for it. You could try running Nvidia GeForce Experience to do this for you.
