SetupDiag erroring on SupplementalServicingAI.dll

I've been having a nightmare the past few days with an old PC that's still running Windows 10 Pro version 1909 - it won't allow me to update it with any newer version.

Tried all sorts including a repair upgrade/install using a 1909 ISO. But it gets all the way through the initial process, reboots, gets to about 60% then errors with:

Windows could not configure one or more system components

To install Windows restart the computer and then restart the install

it then goes through the process of undoing the update changes.

On logging in after this I'm presented with a dialog box stating:

We couldn't install Windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was just before you started installing Windows 10.

I've spent DAYS trying all sorts of suggestions that I've found online but all to no avail.

I then stumbled across a reddit thread suggesting to try SetupDiag and ran that, the resulting file stated:


Matching Profile found: AdvancedInstallerPluginInstallFailed

then assorted system info about my PC.

The really pertinent part though is as follows:

Error: Found AdvancedInstaller, plug-in installer failure.
Last Phase: Pre SysPrep
Last Operation: Upgrade security
Executable: SupplementalServicingAI.dll
Error Code: 80070032


So what I'm very curious about is what uses the file: SupplementalServicingAI.dll

I did find info about a Windows update, KB5004748 which mentions that file.

I installed that update, rebooted and re-ran SetupDiag but the aforementioned error persisted relating to SupplementalServicingAI.dll

Any thoughts please on this? I'm assuming it's the cause of my woes but how to fix it?

Have you used ANY Third-Party software, [CS[.bat[/CS], .ps1, or .reg files to stop, defer, or amend the WU process ?

The only one that I can think of is Shutup10 which I used years ago, however I've since set the the PC back to the factory defaults using its function Actions - Undo all changes ('factory settings').

Shutup10 is a standalone program and isn't installed as such otherwise I'd also uninstall it.

Can you list what Windows updates are currently installed? This might clarify the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried everything on that page yesterday, sadly to no avail.

Thanks also for the other suggestions, I'll look into them.

What's so incredibly frustrating is that the specific cause of the problem isn't detailed by Windows. I had hoped that the results that I copied from SetupDiag would help but apparently not? This really is a very frustrating issue.

I see, thank you, I hadn't realised what an enormous pain it would be to diagnose.
