When is it a good time to upgrade to 11?

Should I wait 6 months until the bugs are ironed out, or should I go ahead now?
I'm on a gaming laptop with 8th gen and Nvidia 1060, I've got win10 running great with it, I'm afraid Win11 might screw things up.

Coming from a linux background, I typically wait 3 or 4 months until all the chaos subsides. I guess it really depends on your self control, if you can wait that long, as some will jump off the deep end and suffer the consequences.

You can take the old adage "if it ain't broke..."

Easy decision as long as you are think of upgrading. Make an image copy of your existing system, and then update right now. Test all your apps and functionality for the next few days. If everything works then you are good. If something does not work, investigate and resolve.

If you are unhappy then restore your image copy. All easy and no special technical skills involved.

ps. I jumped in as soon as the Insider option was available. There were a few issues, no show-stoppers, and now all is fine. No consequences suffered.

How do I do that? Do I clone the entire drive?

The best time to upgrade to 11 is after it's offered as an upgrade in Windows Update. MS have blocks in place to prevent it being offered to machines with known issues. How long you wait after that is up to you. Best to keep your eye on the known issues before deciding.

Two requirements necessary. First is a disk imaging program. Most people here use Macrium Reflect (the Home version is free), but there are others. Next is a disk with at least half the capacity of the "used" space on the drive to be cloned. This could be:
    - another internal drive on the PC
    - an externally attached drive, either an SSD or HDD
    - a partition on your existing drive
    - a network attached drive or PC

The clone process could take 10 minutes to an SSD for a drive that just contains the OS and apps (no data), or maybe double to an HDD. If the drive also contains data then it will take longer.

Just post with more questions as you explore the options (and update your My Computer profile with details of your system).

You don't clone the drive, you make a drive image (all partitions) and save the image on another drive. If you decide to restore Win 10 you "burn" the saved image over the drive.
    Reflect 7 Free
Select Reflect 7 Free, choose "I need a personal free license" don't need to enter your email, download the file to download the Macrium Reflect 7 free.

Try out Win 11 in a virtual machine and see if you get on with it. Note you can do far less with its taskbar than with Win 10's, for example.

Virtual machines can be removed easily and have no impact on your existing O/S.

    Consider the following options:

    1) Make free backup images now so that you can return at any time to an image

    2) Upgrade to Windows 11 at any time

    3) Modify Windows 11 default settings so that you can rollback to Windows 10 (10 > 60 days)

With the above you can test drive for 60 or more days.
The 60 days can be reset within the 60 day time period.
If the Windows rollback feature fails then you can restore an image.
