    Windows 10 1909 End of Life Question

    Sometime in May Windows 10, 1909 reaches end of life. Having never encountered this I'm really curious as to what May+x will look like. I've read many a post here from folks still running Windows 7, so I'm pretty sure that I won't get a window that pops up saying upgrade or else. But, will Windows Defender still get definition updates, and will Windows Defender get its own update as is normal every month? The second Tuesday CUs will stop I guess, but based on the last couple of months, that may not be all that bad. I also have Microsoft Office 2019 installed, will that continue to get updates?

    I'm sure that at some point I'll update to either 2004 or straight to 20H2, but right now I've got too many things going on to really risk bricking the laptop if I don't need to. Thanks!

    The computer used to type this post has Windows 1809 (OS Build 17763.1577).
    The Windows defender threat definition version is 1.333.1662.0 created 03/30/2021 5:32 PM.

    Each computer may perform differently.

    MS defender doesn't seem to be on the list @zbook posted, which is kind of expected for AV.

    however even with an up to date AV, your OS without updates is almost like keeping all doors open.
    Deferring upgrade is more reasonable for servers and serious work, I see no reason why casual home user would want to defer cutting edge OS.

    The failure to upgrade is being saved for a tutorial.
    It should have been upgraded a long time ago.

    Hi, you haven't said if..
    - a. you are blocking upgrades
    - b. if attempts to upgrade fail
    - c. if you have been advised the Win 10 upgrade isn't quite ready for your PC

    Which of these 3 applies makes a considerable difference.

    a. You are in control. E.g. You are using a 3rd party utility which lets you scan manually but disables WUpdate.
    b. Your PC will be quite busy repeatedl attempting to upgrade and rolling back.
    c. You won't be offered an upgrade until the MS safeguard block no longer applies

    You will receive Defender updates unless you've done anything to block those too (see (a) - although some methods are designed to allow Defender updates).

    If (c) there is a tutorial explaining how to circumvent the Safeguard block- however that is then at your risk.

    You can stay with your current build as long as you like, if you use one of the frequently discussed methods - there's a tutorial on disabling Windows update that mentions one of the 3rd party utilities as Option 7.
    @zebal:
    I see no reason why casual home user would want to defer cutting edge OS.
    Possible reasons:
    a. legitimate concerns about stability of or issues reported with certain updates. There have been plenty of those.
    b. nothing new of interest
    c. compatibility - with software or hardware.

    I understand your point, but I don't recall when did I last time have those issues.

    It was surely once with freezing settings app which happened because "in-place-upgrade", clean install solved the problem.

    Issues depend so much on individual mixes of hardware and software. Note all the printing issues related to 20H2 for example, and repeated problems with Conexant .. but not everyone has that particular hardware... (just a couple of examples).

    I like a program that only runs to a particular build of 1903 and has not been updated for compatibility beyond that..

    HP has software that it creates to allow end users to:
    update drivers and BIOS
    check warranty status
    run routine preventative maintenance
    run troubleshooting steps
    etc.

    (The HP software provides assistance to IT System Administrators to improve the quality and security of their HP PCs running Microsoft Windows by analyzing, identifying problems, and recommending solutions.)

    On their business models they often do not update the software to allow use with the latest Windows versions.
    So with an older computer these may be the only available Windows versions:

    Code:
    ✓ v1607 (Updated: 2021-01-29) *
    ✓ v1703 (Updated: 2021-03-29) *
    ✓ v1709 (Updated: 2021-03-29) *
    ✓ v1803 (Updated: 2021-03-28) *
    ✓ v1809 (Updated: 2021-03-28) *

    Those upgrading to 1903 and later can no longer use this HP software.

    Hi folks

    @Homer712
    @zbook

    I'm probably on these Forums the biggest advocator of using Virtual Machines -- make a Virtual Machine of the Windows system you want to continue using - then you can use it until the "probable end of the Universe" !! - You can often "Virtualise" running systems via a P2V (Physical to Virtual) conversion program or simply create a VM with a blank virtual HDD and restore a macrium image to it - you might have to "fix boot" a couple of times but usually it will work -- P2V is far simpler of course due to using relatively standardised "Parvirtualised Virtual Hardware" which runs on almost anything than the reverse (V2P - Virtual to Physical) which is a much more complex process.

    I'm still running successfully a couple of XP Virtual Machines as well as W7, a number of different W10 builds as well as W2K19, W2K16 and W2K22 server editions.

    @dalchina

    here's a reason to keep old OS'es around if you want to run old / legacy things. I prefer Minidisc quality to anything Mobile phone related - especially when played into Studio quality reference speakers.

    The only way I can get a Minidisc recorder to record digitally from CD's / audio files quickly (Real time takes too long !!) is to use an XP Virtual machine for example. Other legacy hardware / software / games etc can run on Virtual Machines long after support has gone - or even the manufacturer no longer in business. This Minidisc recorder is professional quality studio model so no nonsense with the DRM issues with original sony software !!! The PRO models didn't have the restriction on Digital copies.
