    Upgrade To W10....For Free

It may be a dumb question, but I have recently read that you can still upgrade from W7 to W10, for FREE?.....is this correct, despite the free upgrade supposedly ending about four years ago......I have an old laptop that was last used about TEN years ago, and am trying to bring it back to life.......

Yes. You can still legally upgrade for free.
If you know your Win 7 product key, you can also do a clean install of Win 10, and just use the Win 7 product key.

Thanks for that, I have to get a new screen first, and presumably the battery will be completely dead, but good to know that the free upgrade will work........

Yeah, I just used my Win 7 key for a clean install on Win 10 in May 2020.

I think MS feels that the only way they can rule the world, is if everyone is running Windows 10.
Which is probably the reason it's still a free upgrade.

    Hi folks
Just created anotherf W10 VM by installing W7 and upgrading for free -- still working and activated (30 Jan 2021)

The W7 key I used was one of those from the old Technet days --still valid --anybody remember that program !!!

    Cheers

As others have already shown, yes you can still upgrade W7 to W10 and get it activated with a digital licence. Unless you specifically need to keep installed software from the original W7 install, then I would recommend this route.

Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First

It first uses gatherosstate.exe to capture the existing W7's activated state, then uses it to activate a clean install of W10. No need for the W7 CoA key (which in any event may well no longer be legible - none of mine are).

The only real question is 'how well will it run Windows 10' ? To judge that we'd need to know the specs of the laptop, in particular the type of CPU, how much installed RAM, and the make and model. The CPU is perhaps the most significant factor, RAM could always be upgraded.

Ten years old is not too old, my System Two in my specs below was built in 2009.

O.k, just discovered that this laptop, is actually a Samsung NT145 plus notebook.....with only 1gb of RAM, so not very hopeful on it running W10.......just seeing if the battery will hold the charge, the former owner says it has not been switched on for at least 8 years......I did say I liked a challenge !!
