How to install 20H2 when WU is having problems

Six computers ranging from 10+ to 2 years old or so. One of the newer computer has now failed to install the October cumulative update multiple times a day for almost a month. No idea why. First major issue I can recall. Everything I have tried to fix these errors has not worked. Manual installation failed as well which is doubly concerning. WU is working to a point since Defender definition are updating. But other updates (.NET update) have failed.

An in-place upgrade has been suggested to resolve the issue and since 20H2 is available.. My concern is will it even install? Normally I would do it via WU but it hasn't been offered and I am thinking because of the issue it may not as my other computers have been offered it. I will attempt to install it via MCT and USB. Any thoughts? Very concerned as to why I suddenly have an issue with this computer updating and if it can be resolved.

    Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

    • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
    • Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot
    • Click on Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter

    Download Windows updates manually.

    • Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
    • Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
    • Select the correct version and click Download
    • Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

As mentioned, I have done that. Ran troubleshooters, sfc, DISM, tried to install manually. No success.

I think you are saying that you do not have an ISO for your current Version with which to do a Repair install. ISOs are easily obtained - see

Have you tried resetting the update components? Open cmd prompt/powershell with admin & enter:
Net Stop bitsNet Stop wuauservNet Stop appidsvcNet Stop cryptsvcRen %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bakRen %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bakNet Start bitsNet Start wuauservNet Start appidsvcNet Start cryptsvcRestart the PC & try updating again. If this fails/doesn’t correct the problem then click start, run, type regedit & click enter & find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdateTry deleting the entries WUServer and WIStatusServer in the right pane if they’re there, if they’re not there don’t worry.

I would try upgrading again "manually"...meaning download the 20H2 ISO, right-click on the ISO and select Mount, double-click on setup.exe

There is a step at the beginning of the install process where you can tell the installer not to download updates at this time.

    Select that.

If it fails, download and run SetupDiag -

    Post the results.

Ran it. Looks like it couldn't find the .bak folders to rename them. I didn't see a WindowsUpdate folder in the regedit.

WU immediately failed again with 0x80070157 for the KB4580419 .NET update and KB4579311 is again trying to install, and I am sure it will fail once I restart (which takes like 30 minutes each time).

It creates a backup of the software distribution files so it shouldn’t find them per se, it should create new versions of those files when WU runs.
As it’s still not running then are you using any third party antivirus or VPN software? If only Defender then try disabling this temporarily & trying again.

However, if you’re technically savvy, you can try the steps below:
    1. Click Start and start typing on your keyboard for "services.msc"
    2. In your search results "services.msc" should show up. Open it with a click.
    3. A new windows will open containing all Windows services on your system.
    4. Search for "Windows Update"
    5. Right-click the "Windows Update" and then click Stop.

We will now clean the Windows Update temporary cache folder:1. Hold your windows-key pressed and hit "R" key simultanous.
    2. A small new windows will appear.
    3. Type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore in this new window and click OK.
    4. This will open Windows Explorer on the correct location.
    5. Delete all contents of this folder. (Hint: Use Ctrl + A to select all files and folders)

Now we will start the Windows Update Service again:1. Switch back to the windows Services.
    2. Locate Windows Update.
    3. Right-click on it and choose Start.

You may have to run an in-place repair to fix the wu problem.
