v1909 Update interfering with v2004 update

A couple of hours ago I started updating a laptop from v1909 to v2004 using the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant.
When the installation reached 95% I got a separate notification that "updates are ready, restart your computer outside of work hours".
I checked and it is a Cumulative Update for version 1909.

Obviously not going to restart for the 1909 update. I just let Update Assistant finish, and I just restarted through the Assistant message.

This is a strange situation. I had checked for and installed v1909 updates just prior to doing the v2004 update. The Cumulative Update was not in that batch.

By the time you read this I may already know the answer. It's "Working on Updates - 2%" now. But in the meantime does anyone think this is going to be a horror show, or will the v1909 update just get ignored?

I saw a similar situation when upgrading one 1909 machine to 2004 with the 'Download and install' link in Windows Update.

By the time the Feature Update to 2004 was ready to restart the 1909 CU was, I would guess, past it's first install step and waiting for 1909 to restart. I assume that it ended up in Windows.old with the rest of 1909 and would have completed installing if I'd ever reverted to my previous Windows. As the 2004 update was completely successful I never found out

    Negative.
It's in the middle of v2004 update.
That would require a forced shutdown.

Let it complete the upgrade. I'd expect it to do so successfully, as mine did.

Hi guys. Thanks for the input.

I let it run (2004 update) and nothing new happened. I get the same stop code I got the last 3 attempts (I will post a separate thread on that issue soon).

Interesting regarding this issue is that back on the 1909 desktop after "undoing changes made to your computer" I looked in Windows Update and the Cumulative Update was installed.
I thought I saw a double restart in the beginning but I wasn't sure. Now I am. It seems Windows installed the 1909 update first, restarted, then went on to the 2004 update.
    Fascinating Captain!

Would it be better to post the v2004 update failure and stop code in the BSOD forum or here?

I have seen many folks having all kinds of issues when using Avast...FWIW.
