    Clarify:

You say "upgrade"-----from what? From Windows 7? From Windows 10? Not a "clean install"?

Did you make a bootable USB flash drive with the Media Creation Tool and can you at least get the PC to boot from that flash drive?

If you are doing a "clean install", you'd delete ALL partitions from the target drive.

How large is the target drive?

You need to give more details so we can get a better understanding.

Hi, I understand you wish to upgrade her laptop from 1703 to... some later build on Win 10.

Please note that the latest build is 2004, and some experience a number of quite widely reported problems with this build.

Space: were you to search the Tutorials section for ... space... you would quite quickly come across this useful and quite comprehensive tutorial:

Free Up Drive Space in Windows 10

Unfortunately we don't know how your daughter has used space on the disk... whether there is more than one disk or partition for example.

    Two ways to upgrade:
    a. via Windows Update
    - does Windows Update work on this laptop? I'm guessing perhaps not as it's using a very old build.

    b. download the iso file using the MS media creation tool

How can you save space? Put the iso file on an external disk, then browse to it, rt click and Mount the iso file.
Now open the new drive letter created and run setup.exe to start the upgrade attempt.

CAVEAT: before attempting any major change especially on a machine in an unknown state- use disk imaging to create a full backup on an external drive.

Macrium Reflect (free) is often recommended for that.

This is a very good precaution and oh, so often recommended here. Then, if something goes wrong- and it can- you can restore the laptop to as it was, nothing lost.

The last thing you want is your daughter saying, 'But dad- you broke my laptop!'

    Hi

Sorry i did mean to say update my existing windows 10 version 1703 to version 1903, . i am using the windows 10 update assistant , it downloads update files but get message when trying to install them, message says windows 10 will work on this pc and gives you 2 options

    1 = CPU - ok
    2 = memory - ok

! Disk space : we need more tempory disk space to finish your update : Begin with step 1 to free up space ,then move to step 2 as needed, when you're done select try again to finish update,

have inserted 64 gig memory stick , but it wont let me go to option 2

c drive properties are 27.8 gig - 2.91 gig free

I have created a usb boot from windows media tool, but arraid if i do a complete new install from memory stick i will lose my digital licence, Hope i have given you enough info, And thankyou for repling to my post

You won't lose the digital license----assuming it is a legit license and is activated. The necessary info is kept on Microsoft activation servers and it will recognize future installs.

I'm guessing part of the problem is that you apparently have less than 3 GB free on the C partition.

What is the TOTAL size of the system drive---including C and all other partitions on that drive?

It would be quite peculiar if the entire drive was only about 30 GB, but stranger things have happened.

You can do a clean install or continue on the upgrade path, but you need to first get a handle on the total size of that drive. If you do a clean install, you'd have to back up any data your daughter wants to keep as a clean install would wipe it all out.

What's the brand name and model of the laptop?

A bare Windows clean install with nothing else will likely be something above 20 GB in size.

Please note my previous post. thanks.
Sorry i did mean to say update my existing windows 10 version 1703 to version 1903,
To update to an older build you need to specifically download the iso file for that build.

Note that the end of service life for 1903 is this December. Were you to wish to use that you would have to take special action to disable updates to keep 1903.

To download a specific iso file, use the Hedoc iso downloader mentioned in this tutorial:
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Please also see my previous post.
