    Return to Factory condition

My wife has an HP notebook with windows 10 installed (don't know what version (probably home) of Windows 10 it is).

It has a virus (says from Microsoft, but locks the computer up every time it open) that comes up when any browser is opened.

I need to know how to return the notebook back to factory settings to get rid of the virus.

    Thanks for any help.

See what happens when booting in safe mode (shift + restart):
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

What are the status of the important files?
    a) backup files on another drive or the cloud
    b) backup images on another drive or the cloud
    c) no backup files or images, important files need to be saved
    d) no backup files or images, no important files need to be saved

If you can boot into Windows -

Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.

However, you might try using System Restore first, to roll back to a point before the issue happened.

The second issue is what hole in your security allowed that to happen.

The third issue is why you don't have a current disk image backup that you can restore from, to get back to a known good state, without losing all your personal data and programs.

Do you remember the name of the virus that was found?

I got one of here laptops to restore, but I am NOT sure if it did as I expected. It is still acting sort of crazy. It wants to do things that I have NO idea what it is trying to do.

OldNavyGuy I did NOT think "System Restore" actually worked in Windows 10?

I am still working on getting her other laptop restored. I was told to start the PC with the power button and then hold down the F11 key. When it comes up, follow the prompts. We will see.

    Thanks guys

The above image says it needs to update the bios. If you tell it to Refresh, nothing ever happens. If you close it, it wants to Update Windows 10 which supposedly it has already done. Sounds like a Catch 22 to me.

The above image, I have no idea what it wants to do, but if I close it, it just comes back in few minutes.

My wife uses this PC just to play pool on Facebook and the seems work just fine.

Do really need to have the notebook restore windows again? That is the big question.

What is the exact product number(P/N) and serial number(S/N) of your HP Pavilion notebook?

Once it has been correctly identified, we should be able to locate its support site.

Can you elaborate - is the virus message shown on a website? What exactly does it say?
If it’s only a pop up on a website then you most likely have a browser infection.
Close the Tab the message appears on & then close the browser browser, open task manager, find the browser’s entry, right click & choose exit/close, then open the browser & clear out the cache & cookies & history.
