Maybe I just got lucky. Like I said....it worked for me. I clean installed 8 Pro on a HDD and then let it update then went straight to the 20H1 site and clicked the upgrade path. It did it''s thing and Windows 10 Pro was installed.

Any chance the Win 8 update took it to 8.1? Just wondering.

I know I've done several 8.0 to 10 free upgrades also. Worth a try. If it doesn't work, then do the 8.1 upgrade then 10.

You know....I'm not really sure about that. I don't think so. All I remember was hours of updates, over my congested wifi. Don't ask! Then manually updating to 20H1.

Thinking about this, I seem to remember that you couldn't directly update from Win 8 to Win 10. You had to update to Win 8.1 first.

As I recall, updating first to 8.1 was a requirement only if you wanted to take the free upgrade via the GWX app or use the Update Assistant. An in-place upgrade direct from W8.0 to W10 with the install media made by the MCT would work.

Yes, a couple I did required it, 8.1 was pretty much the same as a Service Pack. Same for Win7 getting SP1 first.

My windows 8 is retail CD disc /// windows 7 is OEM on hp laptop.. ( and looking at my disc just now it is an 8.1 release)
You can use Win8.x (retail) to install win 10 on any computer.
You can use win 7 (OEM) to install on the HP laptop.
If you want to install Win 10 on the laptop you can upgrade (install win 10 over current windows (7 or 8.x)) or do a clean install.
To upgrade: You backup your data, download the Win 10 iso, mount or extract the files to a folder and run setup.
To do a clean install: You backup your data, download the Win 10 directly to USB drive, boot from it and install.
