Maybe I just got lucky. Like I said....it worked for me. I clean installed 8 Pro on a HDD and then let it update then went straight to the 20H1 site and clicked the upgrade path. It did it''s thing and Windows 10 Pro was installed.

You know....I'm not really sure about that. I don't think so. All I remember was hours of updates, over my congested wifi. Don't ask! Then manually updating to 20H1.Any chance the Win 8 update took it to 8.1? Just wondering
You can use Win8.x (retail) to install win 10 on any computer.
You can use win 7 (OEM) to install on the HP laptop.
If you want to install Win 10 on the laptop you can upgrade (install win 10 over current windows (7 or 8.x)) or do a clean install.
To upgrade: You backup your data, download the Win 10 iso, mount or extract the files to a folder and run setup.
To do a clean install: You backup your data, download the Win 10 directly to USB drive, boot from it and install.
