    Computer Upgrades

Does anyone know of a place in the south jersey area that does upgrades? I have a 6 year old computer that runs well but I want to get An SSD drive and a new 2 Tb regular drive installed and put Windows 10 on the SSD, also maybe go from 12 GB of memory to 16 but I can probably do that on my own. I don't want to spend money on a new computer if it isn't necessary

As for the RAM, you can wait on that as Win10 works quite well with 4GB and better with 6GB or more but it depends upon what type of computing work you do [minimum requirement is 1GB for 32-bit and 2GB for 64-bit]. If working with large spreadsheets or databases, video editing/recording, Autocad, anything that can become memory-intensive you can delay on the 16GB, the additional 4GB probably won't have much of a visible effect.

A six years computer can easily have win 10 on it.
You can buy a small SSD (120G, US$25) to have windows and programs and use the HDD for data only. It's a way to have the speed of a SSD and the size of a HDD at low cost. It's what I have in my computers.
As already mentioned, 12 G of memory is more than normal users will ever need.
You probably have 4+8 sticks. As they are different you don't have them working in dual channel.
To work in dual channel, that almost double the speed, both sticks must be a match pair (same brand, same model, same chip sets, same speed and timings).

Do you already have Win 10 installed or you would like to upgrade from Win 7 or 8.x?

Yeah I need to do my profile, sorry. I have latest win 10 version but I want to transfer that to an SSD and add a 2tb Drive and maybe a new graphics card, I guess I can just keep the memory I have now. I could probably install the card myself but I don't think I can do the drives. I have the bluetooth and wireless, the audio is fine. I really don't want to buy a new PC

To install a SSD and a HDD on a desktop is very easy using free cloning software.
A SSD works like a HDD but it's much faster. Don't worry about other hardware and drivers. You won't need to change or set them.
Lets see what you have to guide you properly.

This is an OEM Dell PC. The only things OEM's can actually hardware upgrade is HDD/SSD and RAM. The rest of the systems are so proprietary that it makes it so difficult to upgrade hardware. Not saying that it can't be done.....just takes a lot of hardware research and most of the time, twice as expensive.

So the real question becomes; is it going to be cost effective to upgrade a OEM vs building a PC or at least looking at those preassembled PC that are built with all aftermarket hardware.

I think I really only need the hard drive upgrade.

You can add/keep your standard HDD and add as many as that OEM mobo will allow (available sata ports and data cables from PSU) . Most of the time there is a size limit on the HDD....usually a 2TB drive is the max. You'll need to check that out with Dell.

I am pretty sure I can have 2 drives. I would swap the TB with a 2Tb and add an SSD and then move windows to the SSD
