It is actually common to find both SATA 1/2 and SATA 3 on older motherboards, I remember the Blue/ Black/ yellow colour coding from the recent past, very confusing if you haven't got the spec sheet handy. And yes some boards wont even POST if a disk is connected to the wrong channel if BIOS is set to read the slower channels first.

all back on (thanks for asking)
win all installed and partitioned my C drive - now sorting data backup etc..

just minor tweaking and will have it looking just as I want.

Old drive going in the bin. it's 5 year old Seagate with crystal drive errors so probably for the best

it's surprising really with today's technology. I guess the moral of the story may be to upgrade PC and not just the hardware (if like in my case it's 5 years old).

The real problem is the big box shifters are always cutting corners to maximise profits, so selling under sized, under performing, non standard hardware, gluing memory and connectors to the motherboard, using cut down custom chipsets.
On the whole you are better doing some research and building your own system, you will understand better how it all works together and when something eventually goes wrong you will have a better idea of how to fix it.
Just my humble opinion of course.
And you can sometimes find a gem. I bought a system from Acer cause it was cheaper than building the same specs myself since it was on offer, its been going for over a year and has had no issues at all, I've upgraded the storage and memory over the year and everything just worked, so its not all doom and gloom with box shifters, if you are lucky.

Post a screen shot of Disk Management with all areas expanded so everything is visible please.

We're all curious what you ended up with.
