    Installation USB won't boot

    Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows 10, 64 bit Enterprise evaluation.
I extracted the ISO onto a USB drive which though won't boot. I see a blinking hyphen but nothing happens.
I can start from my existing Windows 8.1 via File Explorer clicking Setup, when however the installation reaches to restart I'm stuck again with the blinking hyphen. After restarting manually, the system says it failed at reboot.
From the same USB port my old Windows 8.1 installation boots correctly.

If I may ask another question. I have some apparently irrecoverable issue with my Windows 8.1. So, I'd prefer to wipe and reformat the system drive before installing Windows 10. How can I do that?

    Many thanks for all.

Hi, simply copying the files to it creates a data disk, not a bootable disk.

    Please see e.g.

When you boot from an installation medium, part of the clean install sequence addresses that. (Step 13- Format button in screenshots)

I just use the MS media creation tool and select USB as the installation drive.....works very well - and you can just let it get on with it.

What did you use to create the USB flash drive with and what format is the flash drive? The flash drive should be MBR partition type with 1 FAT32 partition on it marked as active. That's the way the MS Media Creation Tool makes it.

I ran Rufus as instructed in the tutorial; Option 2, Point 6. Yet, I couldn't boot with "This drive can only boot in UEFI mode."
I ran again Rufus double checking that I chose "UEFI (non CSM)". Failed again with the same message. What then?

Seriously, use the MS Media Creation tool, save to USB and you are done without any fuss, why make it harder for yourself.....reboot from USB and clean install.

    Hi,
Probably need to disable secure boot by clearing existing secure boot keys in bios first.
Might also disable fast start as well
Verify other items like csm is also disabled.... os type is not other os...

The MS Media Creation Tool only offers Home and Pro edition, I'd like to try Enterprise.
I've also tried Universal-USB-Installer, no success either.
