What Happens To Those Of Us Who Can't Update Beyond 1709?

    Hi there,

sorry for reactivating that old thread – but it's an old problem on an old laptop.

I also own a 2005 Dell Inspiron 9300 with nVidia GeForce Go 6800 graphics card and 2GB RAM which I can't upgrade to newer Windows 10 releases... It always ends in a BSOD (IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL) when rebooting or rather "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation 0xC1900101 - 0x20017".
What I tried so far in endless attempts:

    • Played with different BIOS setting (e.g. SpeedStep or ExecuteDisable)
    • Tried upgrading from Windows 7 using the Upgrade Assistent
    • Tried clean installs from CD/ISO and USB
    • Removed WiFi-, Modem- and Bluetooth cards from the laptop
    • Deleted mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll from boot.wim and install.esd in the ISO (as described here)

Has there been any progress in installing post-1709 releases on an Inspiron 9300?

    Cheers,
    Christian

Have you tried installing the 32 bit version of Windows 10?

    Christian,

So do I & so does another TenForums user and we both failed to get beyond Version 1709. I have not seen anybody succeed.

Let's run Win10 on really really old hardware

[Steve - The Dell Inspiron 9300 has only ever had 32 bit OSs.]

    Hi Denis,

yes, I've read the last couple of pages of this thread.
Ok, so I'll have to accept that Windows 10 won't work on this ancient computer anymore...

    Thanks,
    Christian

BUT, rather than adding it to the landfill it may be possible to keep it in use with a version of Linux.
DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD.
I use Linux Mint on a Notebook and Desktop, both older and harder to keep up with Win10. Most versions of Linux are free, download an .iso file, create the exact copy of the original DVD which is bootable. Try and if liking there is an Install icon on the desktop. The versions I've looked at come with the free Firefox browser and the free LibreOffice suite of applications and a number of other features.

    Yes, thank you.
I already have Ubuntu on an external HDD for the Dell Inspiron 9300 – maybe this becomes the main OS now... :)

    Christian,

I've just kept Version 1709 on mine and accepted that I can only use it for non-internet odd jobs that would otherwise occupy my modern computers for longer than is convenient.

For example, last year I bought replacement external backup drives and started off by copying the contents of the old, smaller backup drives onto them. At some stage I will use the Dell Inspiron 9300 to work through individually checking each file on the old backups to make sure that it really is there on the new ones. This will give me enough confidence to be able to start re-using the old backup drives for a new purpose. This checking routine might take days so I would not want to tie up any of the computers that have jobs to do every day.

    Hi Denis,

I've just "updated" to Windows 8.1 now.
At least this offers another three years of security updates – and maybe there's a solution for Windows 10 on this computer till 2023...
