    Windows Repair gone BAD

A Windows Repair gone wrong. I followed the tutorial to repair windows. Everything went well until the boot after installation. All I can get is "Selected boot device failed. Press any key to reboot the system"
When I reboot I click on f12 to try change boot order. I get the following screen:

Boot mode is set to: LEGACY; Secure BOOT: OFF

    LEGACY BOOT:
    Internal HDD
    CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive
    Onboard NIC
    OTHER OPTIONS:
    BIOS Setup
    BIOS Flash Update
    Diagnostics
    Change Boot Mode Settings

When I go to the Change Boot Mode Settings I get the following:

    CHANGE BOOT MODE TO:
    1) UEFI Boot Mode, Secure Boot OFF
    2) UEFI Boot Mode, Secure Boot ON

If I try UEFI boot (on or off),I get a Dell Support screen that starts doing a series of tests - all are passed as OK.
I have not tried either BIOS setting. Diagnostics does alot more tests which are all OK.

My PC: Dell Inspiron 15 (5567) laptop

Since I can't boot, what do I do now?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi, sorry to hear of your problem. Was it an in-place upgrade repair that you attempted? What prompted you to try the repair - what were the indications there was a problem?

You can prepare a live boot disk using Kyhi's Win 10 + utilities iso, available from the top of the Software and Apps section, provided you have access to another PC and a flash drive e.g. - or even burn it to a DVD.

(At present, the hosting site downloads with interruptions, so it's necessary to use Free Download Manager to download the iso).

Once you can boot your PC from that, you can check the disk, examine partitions, back up files, access the internet.....

Do you use disk imaging routinely, as is so often recommended here? e.g. Macrium Reflect (free). If so, do you have a recent image you could restore?

Do you already have a full backup of everything that matters?

If you were doing an in-place upgrade repair, you presumably know the major build number of your installation.. could you tell us which build you are using?

dalchina - Thanks for the quick reply!

It was an in place repair that I was doing because I could repair problems of system restore point stopped working and Macrium Reflect could not make images because of not being able to do shadowing.

I have done the repair before with no problems. I do system restore points AND Reflect every day.

I don't recall build number but I checked for undated before i tried the repair, so it would be last build.

Will try Kyhi's Win 10 + utilities iso and let you know the results.

    Thanks again

Sounds good.. first step will be to do a routine disk check. (HD Tune, Health and Error scan tbs).

Noted you have a 256 Gb SSD, and the laptop came, I think, with Win 10 from what I can see at a quick glance.

It would be wise to post a screenshot of your Windows partitions using Minitool Partition Wzard, available on Kyhi's disk.

If the disk checks out ok, then best to restore the most recent MR image of Windows.

I checked for undated before i tried the repair, so it would be last build.
    - however some check for updates and are using 1803, others, 1809 at present. (Yes, we're coming up to 1903 now!). (Clue- your iso must have been the same build, if older, would complain, if newer, would perform an upgrade).

It's easy enough to check what's installed if accessible simply from properties of any Windows file e.g. explorer.exe

dalchina - Having a problem! Can not get Kyhi's Win14393PESEx86 Nor Win393PESEx64 to download without being corrupt (and yes I'm using Free Download Manger in firefox)

I have tried downloading on a Windows OS, Google OS and Linux OS.

I wonder if I tried to load windows 7 from a disk just to get a MBR and then change to Win 10? Or is this even worth the time to try?

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks again!!!!!

All the pre-built download ISOs from Kyhi's WinPE are being removed because of corruption problems. It's easy to build your own now following the instructions Kyhi has posted: Win10XPE - Build Your Own Rescue Media - Windows 10 Forums

Do you have a bootable Windows 10 disk?

Given where you are, it's not at all clear as to whether it would be feasible to repair your Windows installation.

Are you in the habit of using disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) recommended time and again here so you have a chance of recovery without technical help when things go wrong?

Personally I don't consider building your own PE disk especially straightforward or simple. I've just started looking at that. Start from the basic point that it uses .7z files. Many users don't have anything installed to open those.

Yes, I do have Reflect and use every day to image C Drive.

I have been trying to get the recovery disc to work since first problem started. I just now tried the recover disc again and it worked. I got the last image I made. BUT I still cannot get the PC to boot.

    Next step?
