I waited for the latest series of updates in the hope that 1803 would install OK, but nope - it failed again with the same error: "Page fault in a non-paged area." This happened when I used an ISO file to do the installation. The only good news is that Windows Cleanup was able to delete the leftover install files left behind. Previously I had to delete these by hand - which is difficult to do.

That's an interesting suggestion and one I've not seen before. My current page file is 1.07 GB but I can easily raise it 3.

Thanks for the tip - I'll post results in a couple of hours.

Nope - no joy. Same failure with page file set to 3 -> 5 GB. After restoring 1709 I checked page file size - it is 2.93 GB.

Fortunately 1709 runs solid as a rock for me. So unless something new or interesting comes up I'll probably wait a few months and try again then.

This is quite odd. The only time I ever encountered anything like this was on my Lenovo X220 tablet last year when attempting to upgrade to 1709. Turns out one of my memory modules (2x8GB on that PC) had gone bad, and only when memory consumption got into the 8+ GB territory did things start failing. It's a long shot, but you may want to run MemTest86+ or the built-in Microsoft memory tester, just to rule it out as a possible cause for this kind of problem. I didn't have exactly the same error messages you're seeing, but mine were both related to paging as well. The gross situation -- consistently and chronically unable to update or clean install Win10 -- was the same however, which is why I'm recommending this as a possible strategy. Your call!

Thanks for the suggestion Ed - another thing I had not thought of. I ran the MS test which came back clean - as I expected. The default was to run twice, which it did, and both times reported no errors. So it looks like I'll just hang out with 1709 for a while - that's A-OK for me.

Sorry @bbinnard. I knew it was a long shot, but now at least you know for sure the memory's OK. This one's a stumper!

I had to remove Media features from Control Panel>Programs and features>Turn Windows features on or off and unchecked Media Features. Then 1803 installed successfully for Windows 10 Home N.

Just to let y'all know that this 1803 update was failing for me for a long time but removing Window Media Player solved the issue. Thanks for the tip - saved me from reinstalling Windows.
