    Replacement Graphics Card Fan Noise

I have an Acer Aspire desktop pc model no. M3910. I had problems with it and took it to a knowledgeable friend. He diagnosed a faulty graphics card and installed another. I don't think it was a new one, just one he had lying around. Anyway, my once quiet pc now has quite a loud fan noise, which I assume is from the replacement graphics card.

Should you be very aware of a GC fan running? Can't make out if the fan is maybe worn or runs a lot faster. As my desktop is on a shelf above my head, it's like having a hairdryer running when I use the pc.

Is this normal? Is there anything I can do? Any advice appreciated.

With a "used" card it's hard to tell.
But with any vid card you can use MSI Afterburner (free), to see the fan speed(s), and to tweak the fan curve.
    Afterburner

Personally, I would assume the fan is probably faulty.

Obviously we cannot hear it, or see it so it is impossible to say. An audio/visual thing.

The noise of Fans does vary a lot. It could just be noisy fan(s) running at max revs.

A worn fan may vary in sound and revs, i.e. not very consistent. Eventually it will go slower and seize up/stop.

The long term solution is to replace the fans. Short term maybe a small drop of thin machine oil on the bearing usually accessed under the fan label.

Thanks to both for your replies. I realise it's difficult to describe a noise. The fan appears to run very fast. When it first starts, there is a definite 'throb' to the noise which later settles down a bit - but there's a definite mechanical whirring noise which is difficult to ignore.

Will have a word with my friend and poss try your suggestions. Good to have second opinions - thanks.

Some years ago I had a new computer that had a lot of what I thought was 'fan noise'. After much unnecessary 'research' I finally tumbled to the problem. There was a wire running under the video card fan that was just barely touching the fan itself and causing the noise. Moving the wire solved the problem. Only mentioning it here because I was somewhat chagrined not to have figured that out sooner than I did and just in case it could apply to your situation.

UPDATE>>>>>>> Got to the bottom of this. Friend says the original, failed graphics card was fanless as it was part of the mother board. New one he put in has a fan which is why there's a big increase in noise. Seems if I want a fanless card instead, it's a lot more bucks.

    Thanks to all who replied.

I don't see any difference in sound output in a fan-less video card versus one with a jet turbine...

    Unless GPU is topped...

It would really help to be able to ear that.
