trying again: no image after may upgrade

device manager is totally clean.
another anomaly : with fastboot checked on, I can touch a key on my keyboard and the machine starts after shutdown. It has always been like that.
now however after the blue windows appears and the dotted circle turns fast once, everything goes blank for about two minutes and then the desktop appears -- or rather the prompt to type in my credentials.

if i restart there are no blank screens but the dotted circle turns very slowly until it boots in the same two minute time frame.

strange.

otherwise, the computer seems slightly faster once up and running.

A restart is a totally new clean install of Windows.

A power on, with Windows Fast startup enabled, uses the hiberfile.

Are your specs correct, just one Samsung SSD?

Yes, the profile is correct.
I've disabled and then re-enabled fast start and back again.
No change with either setting except for blank screen hiding start up machinations.

I am totally flummoxed.

Again, otherwise machine works.

BUT can't get sfc /scannow to run.

So the only issue is when you start Windows from a clean copy, ie, a system restart, the boot takes longer.

If this is the issue then I would start another thread stating boot is taking longer. Some members know how to do a trace and can pinpoint.

I would state in description that you only have the single drive.

You could also try this tutorial, option 1, steps 1 through and including 5.

i am indebted to you.
you responded quickly and with great information.

the booting issue doesn't occur in the previous iteration of windows 10 so i must conclude it is specific to the latest update.
there are a few threads elsewhere about slow booting and 1909 [sic?] and I've tried a few suggestions (disabling malwearbytes ransom wear protection without result.
I also disabled sysmain services without result.

re-reading this thread I now understand that you think (because of my components listing) that I only have the Samsung SSD.
in fact, I have a Toshiba, HDWE150; 2 WDC 1003FZEX; Seagate Backup 5 gig.
they all function well here and in the earlier iteration of windows.

Okay, thanks for clarifying.

Have seen lots of threads with slow boot being disk related. Yes I read they worked fine in previous versions.

Think I would start with disconnecting the external seagate 5 TB and try booting.

If issue persists then produce a disk management screen shot. You are looking for old system partitions that might be interrogated as part of boot.

Next would be to disconnect each one and see. Failing that we are back to a boot trace.

Just a suggestion to check that it's not a service that's slowing down boot time like I had, though, not as long a time as yours. Open msconfig, then services tab. Tick the box to hide all Microsoft services (important) then you could disable all and try a reboot. Then re-enable a few at a time if there is a better boot time. For some reason I found that it was Intel services that slowed down the boot time for me.
