Dell Latitude E6510 Intermittent no LCD

    Hi All,
I've had my Dell Latitude E6510 for about 8 years now and I really like it, it's reasonably fast and does what I need. For quite a few months now, maybe even a year I've had problems with the Built in LCD having no display, I initially got around this by closing the lid and opening again slowly, my lid creeks in at a few angles and if I'm lucky the display comes on, if not power off and try again. It's been getting worse, I did wonder if it's the cable going from the motherboard to the display, but when it works it works perfectly, no lines, no breaking up the display, Last night I attached it to an external monitor via VGA and pressing Fn F8, that is to swap display and it worked, I had a display on the external monitor, you can switch 'Modes' so I went for Mirror, i.e. Laptop and external, still nothing on the laptop.
Then I thought lets try and force the display at power on, I don't often see the Dell logo and the hole start-up, so I removed all the RAM, I had some flashing LED's but no display, but I could't remember if I should see a 'No Memory' or not.
I'm wondering if the driver has been updated and is wrong, but that shouldn't make it intermittent.
Today I thought I'd leave the laptop on and put the laptop to sleep when the lid was closed, when I opened the lid no display, I did try pressing several keys, but no joy, shut the lid again and it was OK, very strange
The laptop is Windows 10 Pro. ver 1903.
Under Display adaptors, it says Intel (R) HD Graphics.
I don't really want to replace the cable from the motherboard to the LCD unless I have to, splitting the display isn't easy.

    What do we think?

    Many Thanks,
    Steve

I like the Dell Latitude range too. My oldest is an E4310 and the newest an E7270.

I think you will have to open it up, at least to try disconnecting and re-seating the cables. In case you do not already have it, the Service Manual is here:

    Agree with Bree.

    Reseat cable at a minimum

If external always works then I would say driver is okay. Besides if driver was wrong it would always be off / no display.

I've been reluctant to dig into my 17" Dell XPS L701x for a display problem, starts rolling but a tap on the edge of the lid fixes it. It's probably a loose cable but otherwise works quite well. It's one of the machines I've rehabbed rather than just throw away, have others if needed.

    Hi All,
Sorry for the delay, I thought rather than re-seat the cable i'd get a replacement, I got one from ebay, it said it was new but certainly didn't look like it, I did contact them and tell them and agreed to try it anyway, so that is what I've been doing this morning! Not the easiest of jobs, take time getting bezel of and then feeding the cable through the hinge was tricky, any way, with the replacement cable exactly the same, I guess you could say intermittent LCD, but unlikely in my mind.
Does anyone know where I can get the LCD Cable? I'm in the UK. I did try Dell's own site but no joy.
for the time being I've left the bezel off the laptop and I'll see how it goes, but it will probably fail again. I guess I could use an external Monitor, but I like using my laptop on my lap!

    Thanks again,

    Steve

Are you saying that replacement cable is faulty?

I don't think two cables would both be faulty even if the "new" cable looks used. One opinion.

Did you investigate cost for replacement LCD?

It could be the integrated video chip but it does drive an external monitor albeit using what I assume is the VGA port.

The replacement cable is worse that the original, all I got is a fuzzy screen once, so I think it's faulty.
I guess a new screen would be @ £100 and as much as I like my laptop it's not worth £100.
Yes, I used the VGA port for the external monitor

Some risk to it but there is a pile of 6510's on ebay being sold as "part machines". Still I hear you on spending money on older device.

Is this the cable you are after?

Don't rule out the Refurbished/Renewed machines, sometimes better than repairing. I got a 12.5" for $149USD and a 13.3" for $159USD last year from TigerDirectB2B. Both are Dell Latitudes running Win10 Pro 64-bit with 8GB RAM, one has a 128GB SSD and the other 256GB SSD. Both were Grade A and came with a 1-year warranty.

Certainly looks like it,but only seems to be in CAD not UK£.
Apparently, some are 30 pin and others are 40, so I'd need to check.

    Thanks, Steve

Wow, that's a good price! I do have a spare HP Laptop, the CPU is a bit low speck, but I could sell mine on ebay for spares or repair, I'll see how it goes, seems OK the last day or 2.
When it works, it works well, nice display, when it doesn't work there is absolutely nothing.
Maybe reseating the cable, re-feeding through the hinge has done the job, but a bit I'll see
