I've diagnosed a major video problem, but the fix is an issue...

Hi, so I'd been plagued by lock ups on wake for a long time, and couldn't diagnose because no errors were appearing.

About 3 weeks ago, one finally appeared in reliability monitor and a bit of googling claimed it was the Nvidia drivers.

I switched back to an old set, and hey presto, I've not had a single lock up since.

So, I THINK I've diagnosed the problem. The issue is how to fix this?

Basically, most if not all Nvidia drivers after May 2018 seem to be upset with the April/May Windows 10 update last year, and cause this crashing problem - it's a well-known issue and happens in different ways. Mine is a wake up lock, others it's a standby lock or whatever.

But older drivers are obviously not ideal to use as a solution, and I'm losing features and performance.

    So... any ideas?

    Thanks :)

    Danny,

I agree with your dignosis. Display drivers are a common cause of sleep-related & hibernation-related problems.

I think you are only to get a useful answer from nvidia supoort or, if they have them, nvidia user forums.

Thanks Denis, fair point. Sadly Nvidia forum interface is absolutely appalling these days. But it may be my only source.

Is the PC in question the one in your "My Computer" listing?

I see two 980ti cards. If you're running SLI, you might be able to simplify your life by going back to a single card.

(Probably not the advice that you're looking for.)

Ha, sorry, that's VERY outdated. I'm on a 2080Ti these days! Good advice though, SLI, while awesome when it works, is a headache otherwise.

    Well, then.

Take a great leap forward. There are 450.12 drivers out there, which have been delivered through Windows Update to some on the insider fast ring. They aren't available directly from nVidia, but a Web search will find where some accommodating people have made them available for download.

I'm using them under build 19041.84 (version 2004, aka 20H1).

It probably won't help you, but I hope that it won't make matters worse.

My motto: if it ain't broken, mess with it until it breaks.

Your motto is the same as any self-respecting PC tech head

PS I'm only surprised my stalker on this topic (yes, really, I've been followed around other forums by some guy determined to castigate me to everyone) hasn't found this thread and isn't telling me off haha.
