    SFC and DISM do not finish - what next?


    I had an Disk error-checking scan issue with my C: drive. I resolved that.

    I tried running SFC and DISM to fix issues but they do not finish. What should I try next?

    SFC stops at 26% and says Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. (I tried running in safe mode and same result.)

    DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth stops at 18.9% and says The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

    I thought DISM was supposed to fix corrupted/unreadable files?

    Please advise!

    This kind of DISM error usually indicates Windows image corruption or damage, as explained in this Microsoft forums (answers.microsoft.com) thread: DISM Error 1392 - Microsoft Community. Your best bet is probably to perform an in-place upgrade/repair install.
