I think your start menu grey out issue is the colors, options for background you have set. I have mine set to (transparent) to show my desktop wallpaper as the background. I see a color shift but my text is easily readable.

Sorry for my little rant there. I know you're just trying to help. I'm not using any third party applications to customize anything. Everything is default. The start menu being dark is the problem I'm having BTW. Once my cursor goes into the start menu, Everything goes dark and I will be unable to get it back to normal.
Does it do it right from the get go, before you install any of your own programs? Are you logged in with a local account or Microsoft account? I'm not sure it matters, but I'm running out of ideas. Some Apps etc will not run if you log in with a local account. Does it show as activated on the system screen? I'm pulling at straws now, what can I say.
You should give Classic Shell a try...
Pulling at straws like alphanumeric. Have you checked if there is a updated driver for your video card?
