The ads cannot be filtered out when they are designed in a way that you have to sub to remove them, on streaming tv its coded in a way that breaks the streaming and you cannot bypass it i am not talking about gui ads the actual ones baked into the stream.

Outlook email has ads now which you cannot remove you need to subscribe for 14.99 a month or xyzc hurry up and buy now! a year to remove them.

Remember we are talking about a company that is a billion dollar enterprise that owns well over 100 subsidiary's. There is no real reason to milk its customer base like this when they are making 69 billion dollar deals the biggest closure in history, certainly the biggest in computer history. Still not really sure how ppl want to justify that and stick up for it.

It has to be due to Ai because its expensive af market to venture in they do have their own venture Synchron and they are in the space in other ways, copilot means that there is a real expense to windows now that was not really the case before it. They probably do feel the need to recoup some of that because margins and ai is expensive.

Ai is also a race kind of like a the moon landing was. Soon all this rich figures are battling to dominate the space like the first to climb the highest mountain or something.

You buy into the OS with a key and they generally honor that key into the next few OS if you are lucky enough to tie them together like this. OEM keys were factored into the computer's purchase price so you are paying for the key when you pay for the computer.
Well now is the hard line in the sand where they cut all that off all those old keys no longer work. They are now not giving us a entry to Windows for free because soon you might have to sub instead.

Nothing will be free because its all backed by a sub which generates billions in revenue each year and is on the path to become a trillion dollar industry real soon. Microsoft has the very raw potential to be a leader in that trillion dollar landscape very easily as it has a lot of market power right now. So much so that a company such as Microsoft would be an instant leader in that industry.

Also just note that most ai stuff is sub based, just go onto any ai prompt or whatever and you will see that it has a subscription service for premium features, this is because gpt models are expensive to run and those costs get passed onto the consumers.

Copiliot is a gpt model and is under the same paradigm as the other ai services out there.

Just look at the prices for subbing to copilot. I am guessing for extended features idk or care tbh because i see the bigger plan. The free version that ppl will use still has a cost overhead, but they will recoup that because 365 is a blanket sub that will cover many things to do with windows over time.

I guess I'm an exception. I have dozens of Raspberry Pi SBC's here running Linux. Some access the Internet some don't. Nothing malicious here. My Linux PC's far outnumber my Windows PC's. For me its a hobby. It's a nice change from the Windows walled garden.
That being said, my main daily driver is a Windows 10 Desktop. I'm not a big fan of the "Cloud". I run Office 2019 Pro and Windows 10 Pro. And likely will as long as this hardware keeps running without issue. I have never been a fan of the subscription Windows Office option. When it stops being an "option" I'm out of here. Me personally I'm not "buying" into it.

IMHO, Microsoft is counting on the Lemmings just going with what's offered.

Linux is a low share though compared to Windows

    Steam Hardware & Software Survey

Windows 10 and 11 take up like 99% of the slice this is for gaming so its not accurate over all computers and tech but gaming is a big industry and does reflect that pattern where we do know windows is the most dominate OS.

Linux is only for computer nerds and pop cultured zoomer kids who are pop culturing everything that comes before they were even alive. I had a gen alpha tell me about a game the other day that come out before they were born but they were trying to speak like they were there. its like gt out of here you like 10 kid and that is my era i was actually there.

I am not trying to sound like gate keeping but Unix and Linux do have a degree of learning that some consumers are not geared towards. Windows does also have the most support and the most application support.

Unless you can counter argue then don't downplay others it offers nothing constructive. it says right there in the image "Move windows 11 increasingly more into the cloud"
Microsoft's cloud is a symbiosis of Azure and 365 where Microsoft Sandbox is windows 11 in the cloud. No we do not rely on this but again its a slow game, the other examples are there.

As we can see by some of the examples 365 is becoming more than just one thing over time its an amalgamation of services. This means that anything Microsoft ip is subject to potentially be effected by this or not.

Why be so offensive in your remarks? I personally do take offence to those remarks.

The more of your data that is in "the cloud" the more info they can track and sell. Pretty simple concept.

Right now Enterprise is where the money is, its what generates the main source of revenue for Microsoft. Going subscription based on the Consumer side will increase revenue. Right now for most (non enthusiasts) I think its buy once use forever. Aside from the free upgrades to Windows 10. That's how it looks to me anyway. I think a fair number of people buy the device and just use what came bundled with it, Windows wise. Other than Windows update, they just trundle along until it doesn't work anymore.

The other side of the coin are people that come here.

I was a Microsoft MVP, and then Windows Insider MVP. I soured on the direction Microsoft was taking and dropped out of the program.

Linux is out there, even more so these days. I don't ever see it competing with Windows. Not in my lifetime if ever, I'm 66. There is a new generation learning it though, thanks to the Raspberry Pi Foundation and others.

It is going to interesting to see where Microsoft goes with this, and how far they push it. A better word might be frustrating. =(

I don't think it has to be to convoluted for a reasoning. The fact that subscription services are set to become a trillion dollar industry then of course a fortune 500 company is going to want to leverage that, its good for the portfolio and means that their market power increases over time, just another notch in the belt that is the end goal.

No money left on the table because that is wasted potential.

Any of these companies in the top 20 will be or are doing the same thing.
