So strange that unknowingly, I had been doing the same thing over the years until a while ago when a teenage nerd friend told me "sleep mode is much better and shut down is unnecessary." So, for the last three years, I very seldom, if at all, shut down. I was mostly asleep and never hibernating. The same teenage nerd friend (now in college) just recently retracted: "overnight shut down, now and then is OK and don't worry about battery. Today's batteries are smart. They shut down when critically discharged to avoid discharging all the way down to Zero and never allow themselves to overcharge." So, that means being plugged in all the time is harmless.
