Laptop Freezing - Needs Force Shutdown

    Hi All

I am assisting someone with a query they have :

The person has an issue where they will be working fine and then all of sudden the laptop just freezes or certain apps become non-responsive and require a force restart

I have checked under the event viewer under system and application but cannot see any errors that occur at that time

Is there any other place i can check ?

Seems Outlook Freezes and then TEAMS just says we ran into an error as one of the symptoms

If anyone has any other places i can check or where to dig further i will appreciate it a lot ?

For those interested : Windows 10 Latest Version - SSD and 8GB RAM

If anyone has any ideas i am willing to listen

Hi, there are plenty of threads on freezes in general and suggestions, if you care to search tenforums.

As you will know, freezing typically generates no error reports, dumps or logs - I assume you've already checked for those in the usual places anyway.

You need to separate hardware from software- process of elimination.
    Hardware:
    1. Check disk(s) - 3rd party program
    2. Check RAM (and RAM compatibility).
    3. Run stress tests (and monitor temperatures).
    4. With a desktop (this is a laptop) PSU and overclocking can be issues.

Once convinced the hardware seems sound:

    Software:
    a. Check general capability of device when running a typical program mix- check temperatures, resource usage
    b. Check settings- ensure normal services running, paging set to default.
    c. Simplify, eliminate- e.g. disable startups/clean boot

    No easy options.

    Hi All

Just an update - Seems this is how the freezing goes - Outlook freezes and becomes non-responsive and this then freezes the other applications and systems - Is there anywhere perhaps i can see if there are logs for the freeze to see why outlook froze ?

Freezing is typically non-diagnostic, but you can check Reliability History for crash reports, also perhaps, having noted the exact time, the event log.

An easy way to get a simply linear sortable view of that is with Fulleventlogview (free).

Have you done the hardware checks?

    Tried a clean boot?

    Hi

Yes i have checked the hardware and all is fine - No issues found with the hardware itself

The clean boot i still need to do

For now it seems a force shutdown works and i am slowly narrowing down the culprit and it seems to be outlook - As this is the first thing to freeze - Will run this tool on the device to see what MS recommends : Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant - Will see what happens afterwards and then see

Look in settings, installed applications, find the outlook application and see if it can be repaired. This option should be there by clicking on the 3 small dots.

In the Search box, start typing ---reliability ---and gain access to Reliability History.
Check for entries covering the freezing events and if possible start with the earliest one,
Selecting ---view tech details --- should give a report with Event name and Code error.which helps to identify the possible cause. and you might also be given the ---Report sent to Microsoft ---
