Random (but consistent) very slow search bar

    Hello!
This is my first message here, so I hope I've done everything correctly.
Since today, randomly, the search bar started to be very slow (and I mean 30 seconds or more to find even disk cleanup or edge), but another weird thing is that even loading the whole "section" is very slow (meaning that when I click on search bar it only shows loading dots at the top and nothing appears for a while). Also it happens randomly since 1 out of 10 times everything works correctly.
I've tried to restore windows keeping my files, I've tried to create a local account (to see if it was an account-related problem) and I've tried to rebuild the index but to no avail.
I did notice that my .edb file now is way smaller than what it was before "reinstalling" windows, but I don't know if that's related to my problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi, welcome to tenforums. It will help in general if you complete your system specs (Tutorial available in the Tutorials section if needed) - click My Computers below my post for comparison.

The forum prompted you for your full build number e.g. 19045.4170.

    Since today, randomly
    - Have you considered using a recently created System Restore point created before this started?

    - Is there any excessive resource usage (look at your task manager)?

As a matter of routine, please check your disk(s) - simply run Crystal Diskinfo (free) and look.

How much free space do you have on C: ?

It is extermely unlikely that the speed of appearance or response of that box is related to your search index.

Of more concern is the fact that the box above the taskbar is empty.
Was it empty before this started happening?

I did notice that my .edb file now is way smaller than what it was before "reinstalling" windows
Depends whether you're now indexing fewer things, and if indexing is complete.

    "reinstalling" windows
Do you mean an in-place upgrade repair install using an iso file, rather than a clean install (starting from scratch using a bootable disk to install Windows)?

First of all, thank you for your quick answer
I've updated my computer's specs (hopefully it's enough info).
I did consider a system restore, but I had deactivated it a while ago so I had none available (I didn't do anything out of the ordinary yesterday).
There is nothing weird going on in the task manager and Crystal disk reports good health for both ssd and hdds
I have 193 GB free out of 232 GB on my C drive.
The box wasn't empty before it started happening, everything was fine (and it's still fine sometimes now at random times).
By "reinstalling" I mean, I went to the settings, update and security, then I resetted the PC keeping my files (sorry English isn't my first language so I'm not sure how that option is called). I selected the cloud option so it downloaded the windows files and reinstalled them from scratch
I should add that if I wait a short while (from 1 minute upwards) after typing something in the search bar, everything works fine and the search result is displayed correctly (as the rest of the "section").

Thanks. Hmm, I wonder if something's changed with a recent update.

I rarely use the taskbar searchbar- but now I see the same blank box you posted, then it (usually but not always) populates a little while later.

My build is 19045.4291. What's yours?

My build is 19045.4355. I've seen another person on Reddit complaining about the same problem across different devices.
On one hand I hope it's a general problem, on the other that'd mean I've spent a good part of my day doing something useless haha

Here's what just helped me: and I'm fairly sure I did this some time back:

If you're happy not having internet search results mixed up in searches here:
Turn On or Off Search online and include web results in Windows 10

Isn't there a toggle to do that in the search settings? Or it doesn't do the same thing?

Yep, it fixed it. So what is the reason for the problem? Something to do with web results?
So who knows what that toggle does lol
    Thanks a lot man!

I'm guessing some recent change has rewritten that value.. just a guess.

    For interest see:

which is only peripherally related - not the same thing.
