Windows wrongly trying to run app in elevated mode.

Hi, I would greatly appreciate help in getting Nuance's Dragon Professional 16 (DP16) to run again on my work PC. It used to run fine. The error message is always 'Dragon should not be run in elevated mode.'

The relevant entry in the Dragon log reads:
    2024-02-20|18:03:22.717| LEGACY|19468| 4632|I|Info: Running under 'AHSL\dhutch' account (S-1-5-21-41034656-2016893880-285021542-3465)
    2024-02-20|18:03:22.717| LEGACY|19468| 4632|I|UAC: Warning: Running in admin-elevated mode
2024-02-20|18:03:22.717| LEGACY|19468| 1072|I|MsgErrorDialog displayed: (Type: WARNING) csError: 'Dragon should not be run in elevated mode.'. csDetails: ''.
2024-02-20|18:03:22.717| LEGACY|19468| 4632|I|Dragon should not be run in elevated mode.

dhutch is my ordinary user account and does not have administrator privileges.
I can confirm that under Natspeak.exe / Properties / Compatibility, 'Run this program as an administrator' is unchecked.

For comparison, the entry in the Dragon log for a successful run when I log in to the PC with a different user account is:
    2024-02-20|18:06:00.862| LEGACY|18832|12340|I|Info: Running under 'AHSL\Dhutch_int3' account (S-1-5-21-41034656-2016893880-285021542-160180)
2024-02-20|18:06:00.862| LEGACY|18832|12340|I|UAC: Info: Running with Integrity Level: <2>

The problem began when my IT department granted me an alternative user account Dhutch_int3 having administrator privileges.

I am wondering if the following Registry entries are relevant. I think this one belongs to the dhutch account:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GroupPolicy\State\S-1-5-21-41034656-2016893880-285021542-3465
    It contains the entry:
    CN=David Hutchinson,OU=4. Credential Roaming,OU=ADHBUsers,DC=adhb,DC=GOVT,DC=NZ

I think this one belongs to Dhutch_int3:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GroupPolicy\State\S-1-5-21-41034656-2016893880-285021542-160180
    It contains:
    CN=David Hutchinson (Tier3),OU=Tier 3,OU=Tiered Admin Accounts,DC=adhb,DC=GOVT,DC=NZ

Could it be relevant that the CN for both entries is David Hutchinson?

    Am stumped!

    David.

Hi, I assume you've asked Nuance's support or in the Dragon Naturally Speaking forum...

    Otherwise see somewhat complicated discussion:

Thanks. The Nuance people were no help. One suggested turning off UAC entirely, which my organisation will not do.

You could try this, using a standard user's credentials - not sure if it helps with elevation though...
How do I run as different user credentials?
Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you right-click the .exe file or icon for the program, and then click Run as. Click The following user. In the User name and Password boxes, type the user name and password of the user whose credentials you want to use to run the program, and then click OK
    Also see:
How to Run a Program as a Different User (RunAs) in Windows | Windows OS Hub

For example, you can use RunAs to install apps or run MMC snap-ins under the administrator account in a non-elevated (unprivileged) user session. Also, you can use RunAs to run an application configured in another user’s profile (the application will load its settings from another user’s profile).
You could then create a suitable shortcut.

I will certainly try that. But it is frustating not to know what has changed about my ordinary end-user dhutch log-in to make DP16 now think it is being asked to run in elevated mode.

How did you install the program? Solely under your standard user account?
    For all users?

For reference only (and I don't see this as applicable to your problem) but as you mention UAC - you can skip that prompt using this:
Create Elevated Shortcut without UAC prompt in Windows 10

That doesn't help you running it as non-elevated of course, whereas the above in my previous post should.

I don't understand how there has been a change to that if you are logged in as a standard user and then run it, if that's what you're saying.

Thanks. I tried the 'Run as a different user' with a work colleague (an ordinary end-user) and the same error message appeared. But if I use the admin account Dhutch_int3, the program runs. Does that help?

I guess I could always open the app with that account but this would be cumbersome without a batch file, which is beyond my abilities. It is also frustrating to not know the root of the problem. Would it be worth asking IT to do a fresh install of Windows?
