    Take Ownership reg files

I have been using Take Ownership by Shawn Brink for some time and found it very useful but it has stopped working, probably after a recent Windows update, KB5035845. I have tried removing it and adding the latest version but it still fails to work. My Windows version is 19045.4170. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi, welcome to tenforums. Assuming you mean this tutorial (you haven't cited it)
Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10

suggest you have a look at the later comments under that - I see nothing similar to yours but may not have gone back far enough- and then ask under that.

    Thanks.

Thanks Dalchina. I am having trouble understanding how to use this forum or post a new question. You are correct, my problem relates to Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10. I have been using the Take Ownership registry modification for years on Windows 7 and now Windows 10 without any issues but it has now suddenly stopped working. I can't see how to ask a question in the tutorial, I can only see how to reply to other questions, which is not what I want to do.

Maybe try again, and remember to reboot to "apply" the registry patch...
The reg patch I use is the very top one, in step #2, here...

Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10

I'm gonna switch over to Windows 10 and see if mine still works.

It still works on Windows 10 for me.
    I'm on Windows Home x64 version 19045.4170

I even removed Take Ownership (using @Brink 's reg patch), and then added it again, using the other reg patch.
It works fine. And I tested it... it "does" Take Ownership.

And... at least on my computer... I didn't need to reboot, either.

You don't need it unless you want to modify/ move/ edit a file and don't have the appropriate permissions to do so. Sometimes it's needed for problematic personal files. Other users want to modify system files for performing tweaks or whatever. Most users don't need this.

It doesn't really "cause problems"... unless you use it improperly.
But... as @Callender mentioned... no one has to use it.

A lot of things on these sites are for altering the way Windows works. They are all optional.

Most, I'd say 90% of the regulars on here, use 3rd party backup software.
Unlike System Restore... backup software, actually works.

With a fresh backup, a person can experiment with Windows and IF they break something...
they can just "restore from a backup".
Restoring from a backup will "erase" whatever you did, since you made the backup.

YES... these sites are huge, and full of things you "can" do if needed.
They are also filled with volunteers that will help with any problems you may have.
Take your time and get used to these sites.
Even the best of us take quite a while to become familiar with all they offer.

    Hello Kochanski, and welcome.

Just to confirm, did you download and merge the latest REG file currently in the tutorial? I keep them updated, so you may have an older version if you didn't.

Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10

What are you trying to take ownership of? Some items mentioned in the info at the top of the tutorial above will not have "Take Ownership" available on purpose to prevent damaging the system.

You simply add a post as a comment under the tutorial, and of course ask your question in that.

Thanks Brink, I'm pleased you have found me. I have merged the latest version being 25 Feb 2024. I removed an earlier version and merged/removed the new version 3 times and also did restarts but it still did not work. I have used this registry modification for years and it worked well until now, which may be following a Windows update or a Kaspersky Security update.

The files/folders I mainly use it to remove are in Windows\temp an example is C:\Windows\Temp\{103BFC54-857F-42B1-B616-E928F1C47AE1}. There are many of these in the temp folder and when I could open them with Take Ownership I can see they contain old Windows Update .etl log files. Windows stores the current log files in C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsUpdate but for some unknown reason Microsoft periodically wraps groups of old .etl files into the above type folders and moves them to WIndows\temp where they become inaccessible, cannot be opened or deleted. However, Take Ownership was previously able to remove the permission restrictions and allow me to delete the oldest. At present there are 24 folders in Windows\temp each probably containing about 180 .etl files.

Occasionally I have used Take Ownership on other folders/files and it has been invaluable. I am hoping you can offer some help to get it working again.

Thanks dalchina but I must be really dumb as I can't see anywhere in the Tutorial to post a comment. At the bottom of the page are 2 buttons, "Reply to Thread" and "Subscribe to Thread" also there is the "Quick Reply" section. Do you post a new comment with one of these?
