    Windows on "Preparing Automatic Repair"

How long should i give it ? if it is not happening within 20 minutes should i try something else ?

I was just moving files from 1 drive to another and things locked up, I tried to close windows but unresponsive.

My CPU and ram were hardly working and temps were normal as my CoreTemp program was working in taskbar.

I reset bios and tried reseating my ram.

What is my next step ? try booting to USB ?

    Personally I'd
    a. check the disk (you'd need to boot your PC from a live boot disk or connect it to another PC) e.g. Crystal Diskinfo/Hard Disk Sentinel

    If ok

    b. Create a Macrium Reflect boot disk
Boot PC from that and use its FixBoot utility and see what it says.

    If ok

    c. you could try e.g. Option 6
Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

    - try booting from e.g. a Win 10 install disk to Advanced Startup options and try using a System Restore point. You'll need to know your password.

Do you have a recent 3rd party disk image of at least all your Win 10 partitions?

    =============
Of course there's the possibility of a hardware problem- so if your PC boots from a bootable disk and is stable, that gives you an initial basic level of confidence (but doesn't mean there isn't a hardware problem)

Thanks for the reply and suggestions @dalchina

It looks like it is my storage drive. It is mostly just storage but a few things point to it like my Outlook and a few programs.

My main "C" drive is a samsung 990 Pro NVMe and my storage/aux drive is a WD Blue SSD

I took the SSD out of the pc and things run great but I really need to try and recover files from it. But it is not letting me. When i connected it and try to do anything with it it freezes everything up

    - - - Updated - - -

The SSD is possessed . It hardly shows up now and in Disk management it comes and goes. I need to look into ways to recover if possible.

Hi, it sounds as if you don't have a full backup- or are you referring to just recent items since your last backup?

You may be able to connect it as a USB disk and try to access it that way.. it's then independent of the internal cabling used, and shouldn't be able to stop your PC booting.

I am having no problem booting now. I hooked up the storage drive to an external adapter and it is no different , when i try to access it it freezes things up

    to an external adapter
    - i.e. connected via USB?

Again: Do you need to recover EVERYTHING or just a small amount of data?

What happens if you use Disk Management?

And see if Crystal Diskinfo (free) can give you a report on its SMART params.

No, I do not need to recover everything. just some recent files. I have a backup of most of it.

thanks. It does not seem to be totally dead. I can get it to show up in Windows but it takes forever to read it. then if i click on it it takes forever and does not open but i get an error : "F:/ is not accessible. A device which does not exist was specified"

Is F: the drive letter you expect - or does that refer to some other disk?
