We are glad you got it sorted.

It's too bad you believed the Seagate support rep and got side tracked down the wrong path.
You can get the power adapter you need by going to Ebay and typing the Seagate Model # in and looking for Power Adapter.

Don't know what a 'slic' table is but I guess it's perhaps an inbuilt oem licence?

Whatever, I'm beginning to think it might be useful to have a win7 box standing by as a curiosity at least. And perhaps running driveway securitycam maybe? Running devoted storage drives on a different network as a security measure?

Idly asked google and got this, which seems valid to me:

Why do people still prefer Windows 7?
Despite the new features that Windows 10 offers, Windows 7 outshines Windows 10 in two significant areas: application support and legacy hardware support. Legacy hardware always struggles with new Windows versions, and Windows 10 is no exception.9 Nov 2023

That 'application support' could be something. I have a few old favourite apps now without upgrade support. They'll break.

    Also got this:

Why would someone use Windows 7?
In addition, Windows 7 is designed to sleep and resume faster, use less memory, and recognize USB devices faster. There are also new possibilities with media streaming and touch-screen capabilities. The above are improvements for both Vista and XP users.

Sounds like it certainly could be useful. Not 'instead of' but 'in tandem with'.

Sort of. It is in bios. Oem media has an xrm-ms file and the key and it activates offline. If there is a slic table no need to download gigantic recovery media, just need those two tiny files.

these are out of dell win7 recovery media .

They only work if the machine has a dell slic table which is what entitiles you to win7

hp and lenovo and the others do the same thing. The files are slightly different so they match with the hp slic table or lenovo slic table and so on..

Many of the oems still have the recovery media for download but it is an enormous multi language thing.

Easier to install win7 pro from the regular ms installation media ( skip entering the product key ). Then after reaching the desktop run the slp.cmd

oem machines up until 2017 have the relevant slic table. The curious can have a look with nir sofers FirmwareTablesView

there is no real need to look at the firmware table. It is pretty much certain that oem machines 2nd gen to 7th gen will have it.

Most software that was written for XP, Windows 7 or Windows 8, can be installed on a Windows 10 or 11 computer using Compatibility Mode
There is a nostalgic emotion for older Windows and it still works well, except when you to try get online. In addition to Windows 7 not being supported by Microsoft for years now, IE11 is no longer supported. Google Chrome also is not supported. People have been lucky with the Opera Browser and other alternative browsers to get online. But because of the security issues with unsupported Windows. It is not really feasible to keep Windows 7 unless you keep it offline, then it will work as long as you use Legacy software.

Yep, thanks guys. I used win7, kinda, until a few months ago. This linux machine I am on now was my wife's machine. It is an old optiplex 760. I had win7 on it for her for years. It did stirling duty. Then she moved on. I cannibalised it for my shed machine. Thinking now I shoulda left 7 on it. There's some value, you know?

AND less and less you can do with old machines, slow cpu's etc.

Well for me anyway. I never got my head around all the more arcane OS's out there. Like whatever those tiny things run on: that 'pi' thing or something?

I once thought I'd enjoy myself with old machines all over the place doing this and that, everything from keeping archives, incremental backups, running scientific 'mass computer' progs, maybe even data mining, watching security cams, dedicated to this app or that, 'firewalled for safety'... all kinds of things.

Here we are now a family of four pc's all win10, my old linux box in the shed, two win10 laptops, and those bloody smartphones everywhere....

And none of what I dreamt... Perhaps now is the time to make a start.... :)

    Bit of a footnote:

I just took a look inside my linux box which used to be the wife's old win7 and there's win7 still there! A Seagate barracuda 160GB drive disconnected. Tried it out and up she booted !
A good system like win7 on a 160GB drive ! Well that will perhaps do for what I want: lightweight quickly responsive systems for mounting on low spec old machines that can be put to use for mundane single purposes.
And how many drives have I got laying around that i can use if <200GB is useful? Heaps. All good. :)
