    Windows 10 Machine Freezing

    Hi All,

    Our media center is a Windows 10 machine and has been working pretty well. Recently, however, it's been locking up and becoming unresponsive. I did a in-place a few weeks ago so it's essentially a new install. The first freeze happened yesterday and another one happened over night. I am able to reset the machine by holding down the power button for a few seconds, so there's that.

    I do not see any obvious issues being written to the Event Logs. Any guidance/suggestions (outside of buying a new machine :)) would be appreciated.

    Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    Specs:
    Edition Windows 10 Pro
    Version 22H2
    Installed on ‎9/‎18/‎2023
    OS build 19045.3448
    Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19044.1000.0

    Hello @MikeEEE,

    > Are there ANY Yellow Triangles in Device Manager ?

    As a start, with the aim to reduce trouble-shooting, please perform the following.

    • Hard Disk Sentinel [ HDD - Also OK for SSD's ] > Hard Disk Sentinel - Portable Trial Version Available

     Hard Disk Sentinel

    You can run it directly from a USB, and in my opinion, this gives the best INSTANT report available compared to other software of the same type.

    About Hard Disk Sentinel:

    Hard Disk Sentinel is a computer Hard Disk Drive monitoring software for Windows, Linux and DOS operating systems.

    Hard Disk Sentinel [ Sentinel ] is a multi-OS SSD and HDD monitoring and analysis software. Its goal is to find, test, diagnose and repair hard disk drive problems, report and display SSD and HDD health, performance degradations and failures. Hard Disk Sentinel gives complete textual description, tips and displays/reports the most comprehensive information about the hard disks and Solid State Disks inside the computer and in external enclosures [ USB hard disks / e-SATA hard disks ].

    Hard Disk Sentinel monitors HDD status including health, temperature and all S.M.A.R.T. [ Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology ] values for all hard disks. It also measures the disk transfer speed in real-time which can be used as a benchmark or to detect possible hard disk failures and performance degradations.

    If that report to be OK, then Copy & Paste the following commands into an Elevated CMD Prompt and press Enter.

    Code:

    chkdsk %SystemDrive% /scan
    sfc /scannow

    For information: > How to Repair System Files with SFC Command in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.

    Sadly, performing repair install is not the same as clean install i suggest you perform clean boot and execute Chkdsk C: /f command.

    In this guide, you will learn the steps to perform a clean boot on Windows 11 and Windows 10 to help you troubleshoot and determine conflicts in your setup.

    You should also scan for malware infections with MalwareBytes.

    Before rushing into trying to arbitrarily 'fix' the O/S, consider that freezing can have two completely separate possible causes:

    a. software
    b. hardware

    You need to try to separate those two and do what you can to prove to your satisfaction that it's not hardware.

    Briefly, software:
    Now given its application, would I be right in thinking you haven't done any significant software changes on it?
    If you have, then consider the possible implications of those.

    The other possibility would be any updates, including drivers.

    Hardware:
    PSU: - that's a separate aspect in itself.
    Disk check etc- covered in Paul Black's post.

    Other hardware:
    Try creating and booting from a live boot disk (Google if unsure - e.g. Bob Omb's, Hiren's...)

    Booting from that is separate from anything on your system disk.

    Run RAM checks, stress tests... see if you experience any problems.

    Does the computer has a HDD or SSD?

    Paul Black gave you excellent suggestions on post #2.
    I would say you have a drive issue.

    Hi all,

    Thank you so very much for all your valuable assistance! It is greatly appreciated. I did take some time to install HD Sentinal. Everything is green but there is a disk that has the following message:

    ```
    Problems occurred between the communication of the disk and the host 106267 times.
    In case of sudden system crash, reboot, blue-screen-of-death, inaccessible file(s)/folder(s), it is recommended to verify data and power cables, connections - and if possible try different cables to prevent further problems.
    ```

    This appears to be an in-the-past and not a present thing? Again this disk looks green and is reporting 100% health along with all the others.

    To be safe I powered down the machine and made sure all the cables are plugged in correctly. Everything seems as expected.

    As for software there has been none installed in the past few weeks, so I do not think this is the case. I am thinking we should explore this issue with the drive, however.

    Thank you again for all the great support!

    oooooooh... I just found this, too:

    ```
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow
    Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
    Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
    Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
    For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
    windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
    repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.
    ```

    Maybe this was the problem?

    Sounds promising.

    Reboot the computer and run sfc /scannow again.

    The report about communication errors can be cleared it accumulates over time. E.g.
    Communication Problem Between Disk and Host - Hard Disk Monitoring.

    - feel free to search for more on this:
    Problems occurred between the communication of the disk and the host hard disk sentinel

    However that's a large number- and not something you would see where all is well.

    Communication issues and a green health report are treated separately, so don't be misled.

    Now you have a number of drives in your system.
    Have you checked the health of ALL of them?

    One obvious thing to try if you still have problems with freezing, besides what I said above, is to remove all unnecessary hardware - including disks- and see if you still have problems.

    Simplify, eliminate, identify.

    Personally I feel you'll be lucky if that SFC scan solves this. Such scans with repair reports are routine- and unrelated to freezing normally.

    Yes this is a media server w/ 4 discs pooled together for a Storage Space. Every other disc reports excellent health w/ zero problems outside of this message. As for the sfc scan, I agree I am not 100% confident that will fix the problem but we'll see. :)_

    Note this is on my media machine and not personal machine. This machine uses a mix of SDD and HDD.
