The OP was asking about Word 97. The location of the Word template is the same for Word 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003. Starting with Word 2007 the template location is in a completely different location.
BTW, I have Word 95, 97, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2019, and 2021 so am well aware of the differences.

1. As previously stated, I have "hidden files and folders" Checked.
2. C:\Documents and Setting is NOT under Windows 10 (at least not on my system, running Win10 Pro).
3. I reindex Explorer and get *.exe files but NOT *.dot. What I'm wondering is whether under Word97, MS$ put all templates into one file which has a different extension?
Since your familiar with Word-97, what I wanted to do was delete some of the old templates I created. Could find a way in Word hence trying to go through Explorer.
I never figured anyone would install such an ancient version of Office in Windows 10. However, I am up for a challenge. I installed Office 97 Pro on Windows 10. I found the location of user templates for Word 97 installed on Windows 10.
The problem with putting such an old version of Office on a modern versions of Windows is that Windows has to have a way to accommodate things that no longer exist. You will see how it did it from my results.

I found the normal included templates in the usual location in Tools > Options > File Locations

I created a user template and saved it. Unfortunately, it didn't get saved to the expected template folder.

When searching from C:\ for "*.dot" I stil get nothing found.
However, if I move the search criteria to User, the *.dot files are now found. Go Figure?
NOTE
I just checked and one can at least rename a Template and have it show up in the Word Template list. I wasn't sure whether M$ was rebuliding their list from the Folder files or keep a separate index list. Haven't tried deleting one yet.
So at least a workaround since WORd-97 does NOT accommodate Renaming or Deleting Templates.
QUESTION:
Periodically I get notified that Normal.dot is corrupted. I imagine it is using the one in Win-10 directory you identified instead of the one located in "C:|Program FIles\ ...."
User templates and Normal.dot are in the user AppData folder tree. The AppData folder is normally hidden. In folder options did you select "Show hidden files and folders" before you started searching for the ".dot" files?
If the Normal.dot becomes corrupt or you want to remove all changes you made to it and return it back to the defaults then all you have to do is delete it. Word will then recreate it to the way it was when Word was installed.
Back in 2012 I was taking college classes for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. We were using University Office (which was essentially Office 2010 Pro). Before the classes started I also installed Office 2003 Pro to compare it with Office 2010 Pro.
When I was taking the Word 2010 class I couldn't figure out why the options shown and the results didn't match the expected ones. I finally realized that Word 2010 was using the Normal.dot template for Word 2003. After I deleted Normal.dot it was recreated with the correct one for Word 2010.
