I've developed a major problem with cutting/copying and pasting files from the desktop, and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the tweaks we discussed here. I "think" it started occurring sometime around the same time period.

It seems to be mainly with happen with folders. When I try move a folder from the desktop to another location, sometimes there is no evidence of the folder in that new location until a protracted amount of time later, far longer than it should take.

The folder remains on the desktop., but as a "ghost", for a lack of better term, even after the other folder appears in the new location. the "ghost" file cannot be deleted.

Also, when I tried to take some screenshots relating to this, they did not show up on my desktop, where I tried to save them. However, if I clicked on the "Desktop" folder shortcut I have on my desktop toolbar, this is what I get. As you can see, the "new folder" shown on the desktop is not displayed in the desktop folder.

I have to restart the file explorer to clear things up.

I ran dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow, some files were repaired, but didn't fix the things.

Have you seen anything like this before?

When this happens, right-click on your Desktop and select Refresh.
There is no need to restart File explorer.

Windows Refresh problems go back decades and there is no fix for them.
There are thousands of claimed fixes that have, at most, only a temporary effect.
I wasted a month of my life searching for & trying out all kinds of suggested fixes.
Save your time & sanity, don't bother searching.
I restart my computers every day and that seems to me to reduce the frequency of Refresh problems. But I could be wrong.

    All the best,

All this time, I never used that refresh option. Thanks Denis.

Like you said, perhaps there is no answer. Sure would like to know why this is happening tho. Every time. It's not like just once in a while.

If I ever find an answer I will let you know.
    But don't hold your breath.

    Thanks for the rep,

I just restored a Macrium image that was backed up long before this pasting corruption. No more of those sorts of pasting problems.

I'd still like to enable those changes that we originally discussed, but I'm still curious whether anyone has experienced any odd behavior after those changes

Windows has had Refresh problems for over twenty years.
There has never been an explanation.
There has never been a solution***.
You could search TenForums if you wanted to see examples of threads involving Refresh problems.

*** In responding to you I checked my own notes about investigating the subject & trying various suggested solutions. Whilst all the ones I had tried were useless, I did find one untried suggestion from 2014 annotated, "This one might actually be worth trying." I have now tried it and if it works for a month then I'll let you know.

I'd like to hear what you discover on that subject, but I was actually referring to my primary question when opening this thread, "Pasting a file into a folder set for Views > List", and if others users experienced unexpected, problematic behavior as a result of implementing the suggestions about changing the General Items/also apply this template to all sub folders, running that batch file, etc.,

I just discovered a few more details.

    1. The problem only occurs with folders, not individual files.

    2. The problem only occurs with cutting and pasting. Copying and pasting the same folders, to the same location, works fine.

    3. It only occurs with multiple folders. When attempting to move more than one folder, only the first folder on the list gets moved, but "undo move" is never registered on the destination folder context menu. I can cut and paste a single folder, but again, "undo move" is never registered in the destination folder.

I restored a Macrium image from August 2021 that did not have this issue, so I thought that took care of it, but after a while it started happening again.

At his point, I don't know which way to turn. I dread the thought of a fresh reinstall, not to mention it recurring even after that.

Yes, this mysterious behaviour does keep recurring.
    Reinstallation does not solve it.

The best action to take is no action.

I'm carrying on with my trial. It's only been a week and, in Refresh problem terms, that's nothing. I'll tell you about it at the end of the month if there is anything to tell.
Whilst Refresh problems have re-occurred on the Desktop a couple of times during the week, they have resolved themselves the next time anything changed [the next time I copied a file there, ...].
I have not needed to reboot daily. I've only rebooted if there has been any particular reason.
