Explorer: how to make "Navigation Pane" ALWAYS match list of files?

    Hello

In Windows Explorer, how can I make the Navigation Pane (on the left), always match the list of file details pane (in the center of the screen)?

    Background
I keep finding that when I return to Windows Explorer (e.g. by using Alt/Tab), that it's really hard to know which folder I am looking at, because the left hand pane (i.e. the Navigation Pane) is not showing the correct folder!

    Thanks

    J

Oh, you do have Expand to current folder selected?

To see this, right-click in a blank area near the bottom of the Navigation pane.

OK I have a file called: "_test document 001.txt" that I have put into C:\Docs\zz_Macros

What I want to happen that whenever I select it (or any other file in the main pane window) that the Navigation Pane on the left shows me where it is.

Yes, by ticking "Expand to Current Folder" does help, in that the current folder IS always expanded, but the problem is that it is not VISIBLE! i.e. I have to keep scrolling up and down in the Navigation pane, looking for which folder is "selected" (i.e. which line is grey).

Unfortunately Explorer is quite happy to show make other folders visible instead...

    J.,

I do not know of a solution.

If I want to work on several locations at once, I open multiple File explorer windows, side by side & perhaps the full height of my display, with each one expanded only to its own selected folder.
So I would never see the Navigation pane showing both D: & F: expanded at the same time in the same window.
This reduces, but does not always avoid, the incidence of this problem.

    All the best,
    Denis

Could be that the file in which your Quick Access pinned folders are kept got corrupted somehow. See if clearing and resetting it fixes your problem.
