    Native Zip broken

    Greetings,
I presumed that Windows 10 has a built-in zip file app but I am having a problem. When a zip file is selected or single-clicked the Extract tab at the top turns Red and the tools below it are grayed out. Also the folders are not displayed with the zipped folder icon even though they are true zip files.

There is a Winzip on my machine but it wants money. I am using File Viewer 4 but its trial period will soon expire.

How can I get the original zip handler restored?

    Thanks,
    John

Hello John, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You can download the REG file for the listed ZIP item in the table of option 2 in the tutorial below to restore its default associations.

    Thanks for the quick response.

Sorry for slow reply but my old computer takes a long time before Windows 10 is usable. Also tested the fix on a large IDE zip file. It worked but too a long time.

Another problem took a long time too. "Send to" was not in the pop-up menu. Winzip had the audacity to remove it. Removing Winzip takes a long time but when it finally left "Send to" came back.

An IDE I had recently installed was not functioning properly. I wonder if some of its zip files were not unzipped.

    Thanks again,
    John

Adding a second or storage drive with compressed files on it doesn't automatically decompress them, leaves it up to the user to do it as desired. I store lots of .zip and .7z files but seldom the .rar type, saves space especially when what's in them isn't needed right away.

    Not sure I follow you.

By IDE I meant integrated development environment, in this case STMicroElectronic's STM32CubeIDE.

Great news on ZIP working again for you.

You could see if the tutorial below may be able to add the Send to context menu back for you.
