Should I Tweak My Page File Size?

I have windows manage my page file size automatically which does so by default out the box. Would it be wise to squeeze out more performance from my PC by changing it? Or do I just let it continue managing it as its always done on its own already?

    Ya just leave it be.

Personally, I don`t use a Page file at all.

I run a page file of fixed size.
I've found that things seem to work better with a page file, but letting Windows manage the page file really doesn't do anything but use up disk space.

With 16GB of RAM and a 3GB or 4GB page file, I see no issues.
Generally I set the minimum and maximum sizes of my page file to the same number, like 3072 or 4096.

A lot depends on how (what programs), you use your computer.
Using a fixed size page file means that the page file is there if needed, but doesn't get fragmented, and doesn't use ridiculous amounts of drive space.

Lastly, I keep the page file off my C:\ drive, so when making backups... I'm not also backing up the page file.
The smaller the backups, the faster they run.

the page file doesn't matter that much. how much ram you have, the graphics card power and the cpu power is more important. if you have a low end pc then modifying the page file and increasing its size won't help you a lot

You can reduce amount of PageFile fragmentation by setting Pagefile fixed size for HDD drive.

    1. Disable PageFile by clicking “No Paging file”.
    2. Click Set button and click OK.
    3. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
    4. Type Defrag C: /x /h to perform free space consolidation on the specified volume.
    5. After free space consolidation, finish.
    6. Set paging file to a fixed size.
    7. Click “Custom size
    8. Type 1.5 times of RAM installed on PC so if you PC has 500 MB RAM type 750 into “Initial size (MB)” and “Maximum size (MB)” fields.
    9. Click Set and OK button in the Virtual Memory window to accept changes.

If there's a button to push, people will push it.
If there's a knob to turn, people will turn it.

That goes for the page file settings, too.

    Resist the temptation.
    Don't push that button.
    Don't turn that knob.

There's nothing to be gained. Nothing.

Haven't seen the issue in Win8.1 and Win10 but used to be installation of some programs looked for but the swapfile/paging file/Virtual Memory and for a Temp folder, gives them more room than just RAM to work in, something like a scratch file or drive for things like CAD/CAM.

    Hello @yahanna,

Windows is pretty good at handling the Pagefile for the OS Drive, so you do NOT really need to mess with it unless you have a problem . . .

    > How to Manage Virtual Memory Pagefile in Windows 10

The above Tutorial also includes a section on changing the Custom Size of the Paging File for a Specific Drive . . .

    > Change Custom Size of Paging File for Specific Drive in Command Prompt

    I hope this helps.

Generally keep it set to automatic. However, I had crashes after installing MS Flight Simulator 2020 using 16GB RAM which was only solved by setting a much larger page file. I now have 32 GB RAM, reverted the page file to automatic and all is fine.
