Can't create restore point/install some programs

Hi, I have a problem with my laptop which affects several areas. The most direct example of the problem is when I open settings - search for "restore point" - and select "create restore point" I immediately get the dreaded "No such interface supported" error.

Before you jump to any conclusions about this I first noticed a problem when trying to install a trial CAD program a couple of weeks ago. On opening the installation program everything progressed as expected with a window opening advising that the process was extracting files to a temporary folder. When the green progress indicator was almost finished the process stopped and I received the "No such interface supported" error for the program in %AppData%\Local\Temp\RarSFX0\PCAD2020.exe.

After a bit of searching I discovered that it was likely a corrupted/unregistered DLL problem. I followed tutorials at TenForums and ran sfc /scannow which fixed some corrupted DLLs. I also ran it in safe mode which found some more corrupted files. I then ran the DISM tool \online\clean-image\RestoreHealth and it found no problems.

However he problem persisted. I then ran Malaware bytes which found nothing. I then did a deep scan with Avast which also found nothing.

I have been able to install other programs without any problem and everything else on the laptop seems fine. I have the latest version Win10 10.0.19042.630 (20H2) installed.

I hesitate to reinstall win10 over my existing setup because the windows ISO file (when I run it) advises I will lose all current Apps and settings because I have a later window version.

I am at a loss. It is obviously something in common with being unable to run the restore point command and running an EXE from the temp folder but I don't have a clue what that would be.

Can anyone offer any possible cause for this problem?

    Try this first -

If you don't have the Windows 10 installation media, use a working computer and create bootable Windows 10 installation media on a USB flash drive. Should be the same version that is installed on the problem computer.

Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

Boot the computer from the installation media.

Click Next on the first screen.

On the second (Install) screen, select Repair your computer at the bottom left.

    Select Troubleshoot.

Select System Restore, and see if there are any restore points that pre-date the issue.

Failing that, there is a workaround for the repair install using an in-place upgrade for 20H2 that does allow you to keep your apps and personal data.

I can't help much with your main problem, except to confirm that it's an unregistered .dll.

But I can help with the in-place repair install of 20H2. This is a known bug with a known fix, you correct a few version values in the registry, then Setup will allow you to keep files and apps. You can get a script to do it for you here:

Just posted the link above - post #1062.

It should be a sticky somewhere on the site.

Yes, our posts crossed. You added it to your post as I was typing it in mine. This bug has been fixed by MS in the Insider Release Preview build 19042.661, but that has some unrelated bugs of it's own and is not a recommended fix. But it does suggest that the in-place repair bug should be fixed come next Patch Tuesday.

Thanks for the advice OldNavyGuy and Bree. I think I'll do as Bree suggests and wait until Tuesday Dec 8 and see if a 19042.630 ISO is available for download. All the scans and downlaods are **SO** time consuming and frustrating when they don't achieve results.

You don't need a new ISO. It's not the ISO that causes the problem, the fault lies in the registry of the machine you want to repair. After applying the script to fix the issue, the 19042.661 CU, or (with luck) December's Patch Tuesday CU, then the ISO you already have would be able to do a repair install that keeps files and apps.

    Hi Bree,
I applied that batch file to the registry (in another tutorial related to my issue) and tried running the repair setup again but it still said it would still save nothing. Does it have something to do with the fact that the system is already up to date (with 10.0.19042.630) and anything earlier than that will not let the repair proceed?? I downloaded the KB4586864 and used DISM to reinstall the update again thinking something may have got screwed during several earlier failed automatic update attempts but unfortunately the problem persists. Probably have to wait until the next public release of a later version (?)

You can try the (somewhat) manual method -

To OldNavyGuy - I tried the somewhat manual method you suggested and lo and behold I was able to reinstall Win10 and keep all my apps and settings I mounted the 6GB Win10_20H2_English_x64.iso into virtual clone drive, followed the instructions in the link you provided to save a copy of the particular registry entry, made the new REG file and ran it. After reboot I could run setup and got a window saying I could keep all the settings. It took several hours to reinstall however, in the morning, after it had finished, when I logged into the laptop I was greeted with "Files\Windowsapps\Microsoft.549981C3F5F10_2.2005.5739.Ox64_8...\Win32BridgeServer.exe - No Such Interface Supported". Grrrr!
The underlying problem is still there.
Assuming all the system files are now *refreshed* with the new install I am thinking it may be something physical so I am going to run chkdisk and see if there are any corrupt clusters. This is going to take all day - maybe longer judging by how slowly the process is.
I'll let you know how it goes.
If that is OK it could be a bug?? Again, the most direct way of bringing up the problem is to go to settings and type *restore* in the search box and select *restore files from file history* - this brings up the *No Such Interface Supported* error.
I am fast running out of ideas. The laptop is looking more like an anchor every hour! ;-)
