I wonder what gets stored there when cutting a file/files or a folder? I'll look next time.

    I know it's weird.

Next time you think of it, Right Click on your desktop and most likely the Paste will still be active.

You might be surprised what appears..

After "Cutting" have you checked your clipboard? That is where copy or cut should be stored even
    temporarily .
I think that's just for text and images. My active context menu 'Paste' for files and folder not showing there.

Hmmm...It must be held temporarily somewhere else. Worth investigating.

The scary part is Ctrl-V on the Desktop pastes the last copy file action. So if you happen to accidentally move your 'focus' off say the document you were working on when you thought you were pasting a sentence, surprise files appear on the desktop.

Oddly even though Files don't show in the 'Clipboard', if you turn it OFF in the Settings > System > Clipboard, it clears this file Paste Buffer.

    Pretty kooky...

Thanks FreeBooter, Ztrucker, thomaseg1, and Farbatten for opening the discussion. I believe I have gained some insight. The reason I used the term "symbolic link" is that I have a basic understanding of the mechanics of how that works. Going cross-platform to Windows the actual mechanics of how this works is less clear to me. If you have any more detailed analysis of the mechanics, please share it.

    regards,

Agreed. I did a cut from File Explorer andf nothing shows in the clipboard. Definitely worth investigating.

If anyone finds any info, please post it.

Edit: I did some searches and they all say the info is copied to the Clipboard. That could be true I guess but just not be displayable.

Tried to use everything (Void Tools) and cut a Macrium image 49 gig, but that didn't show anything either.

What's even more surprising is if you Drag n' Drop either a 'Move' or 'Copy' that action can be repeated with a 'Paste' that stays active afterwards. .
I was mistaken about Drag n' Drop also going to this File Paste buffer. I was testing too many things at one time.
