Updated Windows, unable to change read / write access!

    Full title:

Updated Windows (from 1809 to 1903), dealing with inability to change permissions, read and write access on an older, corrupted instance of Windows I kept around for game storage!

Yeah I ended up dealing with OS corruption and luckily had a back-up that I fell back on and kept the rather large 2TB M.2 NVME drive around as a secondary drive as I didn't feel like reinstalling hundreds of gigabytes of games worth of data and I just kept them in their original locations, i.e. K:ProgramFiles (86) > Steam > Steamapps > Common etc.

This morning I attempted to reinstall a game to a similar directory (Origin Games) and was told that I couldn't do that because the folder is ready access only. Attempting to uncheck the read only checkbox and it's simply reverted when you close the window. I've already spent 3 hours with this and I've tried manually changing the permissions and I've tried two separate programs, TakeControl Pro and Take Control EX that are not working.

What are my options here, it seems this is a TrustedInstaller problem because TrustedInstaller still thinks that this is a working instance of the operating system even though it's on a completely different drive path (K).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen your other post on a already running solved thread
I thought it best to start again here on your own created thread

Can you clarify for me that the 2TB M2 drive now allocated letter K is the drive that orignally had these program files on, but also the drive that was orignally the system drive and therefore with Windows installed on the drive and at that time allocated letter C

OR was this NOT the OS drive with Program files and you simply kept game data on this drive completely separate to the OS drive.

    I suggest you try this
Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10

and then try take ownership of the program files on the right click contect menu

Yes what is currently K drive was formerly C drive and has all of the Windows files and folders where they would be if it was a functioning instance of the OS.

I've tried to take ownership about 4-5 different way, with two separate programs, a batch file, manually changing permissions and via elevated command prompt. The problem always returns "failed to enumerate objects: access is denied"

This is a fairly common and longstanding issue with WIndows apparently (see comment section):

    1. There is no needf to quote back my message, it actually makes it more difficult to follow IMHO
If you just type in the quick reply box - it is a lot easier

    2. Have you tried my method on the link

    3. If so and it does not work try this= it may be the same as you have tried I do not know if it is

    4. If that does not work boot the computer on a LInux live session and then get your files you need of the K drive to another location - eg flash pen drive and then you will be able to access them, when you come out of Linux and go back into
    Windows
