You're about to be logged off. Windows Will shut down in one minute.

I keep getting this error message on my brand new Windows 10 laptop. It's random. I have no malware on my machine (I run Malwarebytes and generally stay off of websites that I don't know). And I already turned off automatic restart on my start up and recovery settings. I checked the event viewer and this was logged just before I was forced to restart.

"Successfully scheduled Software Protection service for re-start at 2120-09-30T17:33:20Z. Reason: RulesEngine." Don't know if that helps or means anything.

Any help is appreciated thank you.

"Go to Computer Management->Services and Applications->Services and restart the Software Protection service". Description : Enables the download, installation and enforcement of digital licenses for Windows and Windows applications. If the service is disabled, the operating system and licensed applications may run in a notification mode. It is strongly recommended that you not disable the Software Protection service. If you are fine with that, you can try disabling the service and check how it works

Huh, interesting. It keeps turning itself off. I clicked on "start the service" and then a minute later it turns off and I have to "start the service" again. Is this the issue?

If it's brand new, do you have the ability to Restore to Factory which means put it back like it was when you first got it?
This may be the best option if you don't have a lot of data on it yet. Then you can start over, setting it up again.

You don't give us any information on the computer so not much we can do to help yet.

Maybe fill out System Specs under My Computer?

How to fill out System Specs for tenforums.

See here: System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums

Fill out as much as you can, look at mine for an example of what can be included. The more information the better.

    Is Windows 10 activated?

It's not something I've encountered, but I believe that Win10 will shut down often if it has not been activated.

    100 years in the future.

You'll need another new system by then.

Lots of posts about this issue online...going back a few years.

I'd rather not do a factory rest. It's relatively new, only a few months old but I've got a lot of stuff on here that I'd rather not lose. It says that my windows 10 is activated. Spunk's advice about restarting software protection is not working for me. the service keeps turning itself off. Not sure what's going on here.

You can try an in-place-repair upgrade. Pick to save personal apps and files. Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Before that try How to Repair Corrupted Windows System Files with the SFC and DISM Commands

Are you doing image backups on a regular basis? If not you should be:

The first thing you need to do is backup your current install. It won't help you for this problem but it will for future problems. The best way to do this is to use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image backup to an external hard drive. If you don't have an external hard drive now is a good time to get one as regular backup should be a part of your normal process. You can get a 1TB external hard drive for $60 (less if on sale).

There are other backup programs available but Macrium is the one I use and recommend.

Once you are doing that regularly, then when a situation like this arises you can easily restore the last backup image. That should solve the problem and you won't lose any data.

Once this problem is resolved, do another Macrium backup then repeat on a regular schedule. Weekly is a good cycle.

Also, you should enable System Restore. Doesn't always work but it does often enough that having it as a possible option is worth having.
