Problem with Sleep Mode - Fresh Install

I just did a Clean Install on an Asus K53SD laptop. Version 2004 Home Edition from USB. Install went smoothly.

    One problem so far:
Going into Sleep from the Power button on the Start Menu, the laptop screen goes black, but the power light stays on and the fan continues to run. It seems to not be going into Sleep.
Nothing I do can bring it out of this state. I have to do a hard shutdown and the start the PC. No complaints from Windows (messages).

I have tried checking all the settings for Sleep in Power Options. All is normal.
It is running an Nvidia driver from WU. (Installed before I could do it manually, but it seems to be a normal Nvidia driver.
Looking for pointers of what to check next.

I would also check motherboard drivers and BIOS for updates if "rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0" doesn't make it sleep.

Yes, as this is a fresh install I am running on generic MS drivers. Good point.

"powercfg -h off" try turning off hibernation with this command. Also turn off "fast startup" if it is on. Then see if you can get it to sleep from Start menu or command line.

I would power down the PC after making above changes before testing sleep.

No not yet. I can do that.
    I'll try Steve's suggestion too.
