I followed the link in post #3. I think I disabled all non-Windows services and startup items. But, it looks to me like Windows services may have got disabled as well!
Do you recall doing Part 1 Step 3: "check the Hide all Microsoft services box"?

Yes, I thought I did that.
I've managed to do a system restore from the Recovery Environment. There was one available! That was a close call.
So, since I last posted, I had 3 days of everything working OK, and then this morning my PC was still awake after the overnight backups, and now it's back to square one, i.e. screen going off and then immediately being brought back to life and never going to sleep.
This really is driving me crazy!
I now have a desktop that won't sleep for a client. I know it was sleeping as I set it up and tested.
